gearing

i have 4.10 gears with a limited slip in my car that i just purchased. i want to change the gearing so i can avoid shifting to 5th gear in the 1/4 mile. i am thinking 3.73 would be perfect but am considering 3.55 incase i get into some heavy mods later. what do both gears rev to in 4th gear? i want something that is capable of 120ish in 4th. i am guessing i can still use the same limited slip on the new gears? btw i am on the stock 225/60/15's and its a 5 speed.

dtermine what kind of mods you plan in the future first, then decide if you'll need another gear. what kinda rpm you turning in the quarter and how close to the stripe are you when you have to shift into 5th?

I know what my plans are for the car. i just want the thing to do around 120 in 4th gear. i dunno if i need 3.55's or 3.73's to obtain this. i havent had the car to the track yet so i dunno what i run the traps at, but i know 90mph in 4th is redline so i know i would need 5th gear if i wanted to go now.

ok, assuming you use a 275/50-15 tire and cross the traps at 6000rpm, in theory 4th gear with 3.55's will be 125mph and 119 w/ 3.73. Now with that known and guessing a 3000 lb car including you, it will take roughly 450-475 rwhp to achieve this. Hope this helps
