Checking compression and such on a pulled motor?

I picked up a motor today for $200. complete long block, with intake manifold, timing cover and such. all stock

guy swears up and down its a great motor, only 94k miles. But I would rather know a bit more if I can.

other then pulling the motor apart and eye balling it, is it possible to do some other tests to be sure this motor is alright?

is it possible to do a compression test with the motor on a stand, turning it over by hand?

looking for some ideas. Looking to swap this bottom end with mine, due to mine being all jacked up.

lol, I did the math. I figure it would cost me around $6,000 to do a 351w swap, and that is using my current heads/cam. Just can't swing that sort of money.

if this motor is alright, going to swap it with mine, and spray it with a 150 shot.

lol FUG YEA!

I hope its not screwed up..... if it looks alright, im just going to put it in, and cross my fingers.

still has oil in it, and a filter on it. so ill drain the oil, and cut the filter open.

other then that im not sure what else I can do while its in its current state to be sure its in good condition.

to do this wouldn't I need a cradle type engine stand? the ones that sit on the floor and hold the motor by the mounts?

i have no such thing. but I have seen some people build there own. I guess it would be the best shot, but it would take some work.

building the cradle, installing my flywheel, bellhousing and starter.

anything simpler?

You could get creative with blocks of wood cut to lenght and bolted to it to support it off the floor too. Just have someone there to keep hold of it from flopping over or have it strapped down. Shouldn't be that difficult to come up with something. But those cradles can be had for pretty cheap too.

hmm, I will look into it.

I have plenty of time, about 5 months of winter, lol. So I might just build my own.

lol, if I had such a thing available. Maybe the engine hoist with some 2x4's under it to stop it from releasing?

I'm gonna call the engine shop tomorrow and see how much they want to put new rings and bearings in this motors as im thinking it has a much better chance of not having a screwed up crank like my current motor.

some pictures of the mule. very dirty, gonna suck cleaning this sob.

primed the oil pump for a good 2 minutes, motor turned over pretty smooth by hand, cut open the oil filter. Oil is like sludge, probably the thickest nastyest oil I have ever seen.... but there was nothing in the oil filter, so It just needs a good cleaning. so far so good, looks like this motor might work out!
