Running rich

Timing is at 14* and fuel pressure is at 40. Any suggestions?

What injectors are you running? How rich are you running? Do you have a wideband or are you reading plugs? Or just going by the smell/smoke?

24# injectors...No wideband; going off of smell. It's noticeable.

How much timing are you running right now? You may try and add some timing if your not already pushing it.

14 degrees initial. I've been to 16 degrees before my heads, cam and intake swap. But haven't gone back since.

I would add a bit of timing then and see what happends. I bet it will lean out a good bit since and with the H/C/I it makes even more sense to add timing anyway. Start adding timing till you hear it pinging then back it off 4 degrees or so.

Ok will do. Thanks towelly. I'll try 16 degrees and see what happens. Ideally, shouldn't I either get a moates quarterhorse (or similar) or a dyno tune? I'm doing this in the meantime since I'm broke now

Yeah. QH is awesome if you can afford it. There is a lot of support online and a lot of knowledge out there. Its the best for the money, thats for sure. The next best thing is a stand alone like Megasquirt or BigStuff and thats a lot more money.

QuarterHorse for Fords [QH1] - $249.00 : Moates.Net

$250 - Moates is temporarily closing to do a overhall on there stock but you should be able to find a QH around for cheap. You can usually find them cheaper used and still in good condition.

It doesn't "Display" anything as it is just a pigge-back chip.

Description from moates.net:

"You can change ANY parameter while the vehicle is running without disturbing operation. You can log ANY parameter in RAM from the EEC-IV and V at sample rates well over 2,000 frames per second through the same mini USB cable (no OBD cable needed). Simultaneous ultra-high-speed rigorous datalogging capabilities are closely-coupled with the realtime-emulation / tuning-on-the-fly for the ultimate tuning experience. This device continues the tradition and heritage of our highly-integrated, low-cost, high-quality tuning tools from GM and Honda into the Ford arena. It is fully supported by all the major DIY-EFI software such as Paul Booth's EEC Editor, Clint Garrity's Binary Editor, and Mark Mansur's TunerPro.

The QuarterHorse does have limited support (4x) for remote switching via rotary knob (available separately, search this site for 'QH Switch') as well as software-based program selection from PC (8x 1-bank, 4x 2-bank, 2x 4-bank).

It also supports reading of the EEC port to harvest 'stock' binaries. This must be done in-vehicle, or on a test bench harness, to supply the EEC with power.

This product kit comes with the QH device, premium USB 2.0 mini-to-regular USB bulkhead cable, cable mounting bracket and bolt, standard USB 2.0 cable, and 2x snap-on ferrite beads. Software is available separately (check our Software and Drivers section)."

You can datalog pretty much any parameter you want in the stock EEC. So you can display whatever on your laptop you want when you datalog it. With QH, one of the great things is that you can read the stock tune and upload it so you have a perfect base to start. You never have to start from scratch.

I wasn't either until I decided I didn't want anyone else to touch my car. So I learned. Its not all that complicated once you get your mind wrapped around the process... Its just like tuning a carb, but instead of twisting screws and changing jets , you're poking buttons and changing "tables". All you're doing is giving a car what it wants. If you have some spare time and a spare $20 go buy "Engine Management and Advanced Tuning" by Greg Banish from your local book store. It filled in a lot of the missing pieces about tuning for me.

After that I went to Greg's class in Orlando and now I'm tuning that dragster you saw on my youtube channel! I have all the confidence in the world that I can do it and now I'm putting that confidence to the test.

Back up a second.... did you change your MAF to a 24lb calibration? Also, lean can smell like rich. Pull a plug and see what it 'says'

True! I did get a little ahead of myself and assume things were correct otherwise...

MAF is calibrated correctly. And exactly what do you mean by that? What's it going to look like under certain circumstances?

You want the center porcelain to have a light brown color, and little to no soot on the outter thread ring face. However to describe that. I found this for you quickly on google, but if you look around, you may find some better pics or descriptions.
