New to the board

hey guys, my name is john and i just bought a 1990 LX for a very cheap price. I got it for $1,500 and the engine was rebuilt 10k miles ago and the tranny 20k miles ago. The body does have a little damage though, but hopefully ill repair it without having to pay too much. This forum seems really cool.So do you guys have any suggestions on what cheap mods to do first on the lx? its completely stock automatic, so anything will help.

Welcome John. I have the same car! First mods, 4:10 gears, exhaust, underdrive pullies, and a top end kit from Trick Flow or holley.

What is your budget? I could go on forever on good mods to do.

thanks! and well, for right now, since im only 17, i only have about $1,500 for mods. I already ordered some new headlights and hid lights for exterior, but now i wanted a performance mod. I saw some used underdrive pullies for $60, are they really worth it? well, are the gains noticeable?

Do a exhaust and a cold air kit first. Then a set of gears. The gears will really help.

flowmasters 40 series are classic, SLP loudmouth I or IIs are awesome. Dont let people tell you that you will never get an auto to run with the manuals. It just isnt so! My underdrive pullies had a noticeable gain. Mine were $79 new. So get yourself the pullies, full exhaust, cold air, and gears and you will be satisfied until you can pay for more parts.

Believe me, i know what it is like to be in school and try to build a car. I am 19 and am in college. But hey, if you need anything else, just ask. There are alot of people on here willing to help with anything you need.

Welcome aboard bro! Glad to have ya...

As for mufflers... Like Tony said, the 40's are classic, but the mofo's resonate inside like crazy! I got 'em on my '91 w/ dumps... I wanna try a Magnaflow setup.

I also have underdrives, an intake, gears, exhaust and a few other odds and ends. I gots a T-5 (5spd) 3.73 gears. 4.10 will be what you want for the auto.

When you do the exhaust, spend the extra $ and get long tube headers.

Are you wanting immediate power? If so, spray it. Its fairly cheap and easy for a first power adder. The refills can get expensive, but you'll eventually get bored and want a ProCharger...

Same here dude, you need anything, gimme a holla!

^^^You two are funny! I guess it is the "young" in me. I love people looking at me in this car. Sounds better than 95% of cars on campus and i have a horrible exhaust leak too!

I have actually contemplated going with an X pipe to be even louder, but it would be raspy too so i am keeping the o/r H pipe.

Go with some 4.10 gears first and some exhaust to open it up and make it sound like you want it to. If you go with longtubes on an AOD be prepared to have some fun installing them.
