Newbie AOD question

Awesome site guys! 1st question on forum.

I just bought a 94 Gt vert, aod, with 65k miles on it. It has just a couple of bolt ons now; flowmasters and a BBK cool air inlet. I installed new plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

This is just a garage kept hobby car for me. It wont see the strip, just some occassional street fun. Im planning a TFS H/C/I install next winter when it sits idle.

My question is regarding the AOD transmission. It seems to work ok, but shifts arent quick and it doesnt jump off the line. IS there an electric tuner/programmer that can rememdy this to some degree? Im not concerned about engine timing, just some tranny tuning.

My wife drives the car too. So thats why we went wit the AOD. Im just looking for a little improvement. Maybe with more HP I will want even more??

If this is not possible, is there a rebuild for this trans that would sharpen performance and be a better match for more HP down the road?

TIA[/b]

Go get it tuned on a dyno or get an Xcal 2.

Or get a transgo shift kit for harder, faster shifts. with a little bigger stall. 2200-2800 would work for what you want.

Thanks Tony.

Ive got to look around to see if anybody has a dyno in West Michigan. I think that would be good for after the H/C/I install also.

Where can I find info on the Xcal 2?

Ive never done any trans work at all. Would the shift kit require trans removal? For a higher stall would that be a different torque convertor?

Sorry not trying to avoid you question but you might want to also consider a little lower gear just to livin up the car and make it a little more fun to drive. Maybe 3.73's or 4.10's and you will notice a world of difference.

Info on the Xcal 2: just type that in google and you should find oodles of info. yep, different torque converter would be needed fo a higher stall. I have never done a shift kit, i bought one but sold it, but i think it just involves removing the bottom of the trans and putting in all the springs and stuff. But you might want to get it professionally done if you are not comfortable with it.

Since it is a vert and it is heavy I would at the very least use a 2500rpm converter and throw some 3.73 gears in with a mild shift kit and you will be very happy with that and you wont even have to tune it if you dont want to..

most low stalls have a rated stall. Mine was rated anywhere from 2200-2800...I didnt want to give hime something too steep since he said it would be street fun and his wife would be driving it.

By the way cgb6810: my stall is 2200-2800 new in box, I will sell it to you for $200 shipped. I am contemplating going with a bigger stall. I can get a pic up sometime if you need one. let me know man.

Thanks for the help Tony!

I did some research on the Transgo kit and even found a couple of install articles. Then I searched on Ebay, used buy it now ($80) and have a transgo kit on the way.

The install looks pretty straight forward and it sounds like Im going to get exactly what Im looking for. I still think Im going to go with the 3.73 gears too.

Im going to pass on the convertor now. I dont want to drop the trans just yet.

I hope you did not buy a used kit off EGAY!!!.. Used trans parts is never a good way to go.. That shift kit is not gonna help much without a converter to complement it.. You'll notice a difference but no where near the way you should...

A used kit!!! The guy probably took the good springs out. You should've bought it new. They are about $98 brand new.

NO NO NO!!!

This kit is BRAND NEW, NEVER OPENED!

Im an adult guys. I would never buy a used part like that to save a couple of bucks.

Ebay has a lot of part dealers that sell new parts. Of course there are scams. Out of 300 transactions Ive had on EBay Ive been scammed twice. But the savings I've enjoyed have FAR outweighed the few disappointments.

They say the stall depends on how much power you are putting down. I hope to have it back by next week. will let you know.

Stangzilla, I meant I "used the buy it now" feature of the auction. That way I could buy it without waiting for the end for the end of the auction.

You got me thinking though. Im going to look at the kit when it arrives. I never thought about someone using the new springs and throwing the old ones in the new box. Its sold by a tranmission parts dealer though.

I wouldnt think it would be used. Whoever would sell used springs in a shift kit box is fawking retarded. We just misunderstood what you said is all.
