BM shifter for AOD
I have a 92 LX with the AOD trans. I want to install the BM shifter#81002 but need to know if it will allow me to access 2nd gear manually. The stock shifter will not allow you to use 2nd gear manually. The indicator does not have a 2nd gear position which I find very odd. Any help?

Re: BM shifter for AOD
actually your stock shifter CAN allow you to stay in 2nd as long as desired. it just takes a little practice. but if you are just wanting to replace it. the b&m hammer shifter does allow you to go through every gear. but make sure you buy the one for the 87-93 mustangs the other one is just a waste of money and wont fit in your console correctly. but the trick with the stock shifter is, you start out in first like normal but when your ready for second shift into the next gear which on the line i believe is just D and once it shifts into second shift back down into first and it will stay in second. then when your ready for third go back up to D (drive) then 4th Overdrive. you may get jerked around the first couple of times but if your over atleast 3thousand in first and shift you should be fine. tell me what you think? |

you have to make sure your rpms are up and just drop it into first and it should stay in second if your running about 25-40 and that is like the perfect hit with a set of 373's at about a 40mph roll. but once your rpms go down as well as your speed it will automatically go back to first. its kind of annoying but you will get the hang of it. its alil bit easier to show in person but obviously thats not possible, ill try uploading a video of me doing it though if that helps? |

Thanks for the info, I think i will go with the BM shifter as I have been unhappy with the stock unit since I have owned the car. I have a shift kit and get very quick, sharp shifts and the stock shifter is taking some of the fun out of it.

I bought a stock shifter on E-Bay awhile back from a 89GT and the indicator window includes 2nd gear but the shifter appears to be identical to mine so I have not installed it yet because I'm not sure it will help my situation. Any thoughts?
