Starting to do my heater core

When I bought my 1990 5.0L, the heater core was shot and we are well into fall now so it's time to do it. My dad is going to be helping me and he's a mechanic and has done heater cores before. I've heard the whole dash has to come out but I've heard from others just A/C cars that has to happen. My Mustang dosen't have A/C so does the dash have to come out? Anything else I should know in regards to doing this job? Thanks!

Non ac cars should be relatively easy. I wanna say that if you pull the glove box that there is an access panel behind it that gives you pretty easy access to the heater core. With ac cars its a whole different story. I did mine without pulling the dash but did some cutting of the airbox to get it out.

And keep in mind, we are talking factory a/c and factory non a/c cars for future readers. Deleting the a/c doesn't make it easier.

if 86 or older then yeah thats all youve really got to do, but if its 87+ then the whole dash has to come out, or at least get pryed to the side like whitemamba posted.

its a bitch, so ill give you this warning, buy good brand new parts, and make sure anything that is questionable gets taken care of NOW, you dont want to dick with it again, ever

It's easier than it seems. I was intimidated the first time I did one, but when it was done, I felt like I was worrying too much. By the way. 1/4" ratchet wrench for the win, and I bet that screw doesn't go back in. When you get to that point, you'll know exactly what I was talking about.

Yea, the heater core is not that bad. The A/C Evaporator was more of a pain because you have to break the box open and glue it back.

If you have a lot of miles, I highly recommend doing the A/C Evaporator while you are there.
