Clutch slipping already??

So, My friend has a 94 GT vert that we converted from an auto to a t-5. Everything was going great and driving fine for the last three weeks. I suppose he put on about 500 miles or so.

We took our cars to a 1/8th mile track over the weekend. He made 7 passes on street tires and only did a burnout 3 or 4 times. Going home, he called and said his clutch was slipping really bad. We had a hour and a half drive ahead of us. He made it home but his clutch is toast.

He went with a Ram clutch when we did the swap. I've always used Zoom and Centerforce, are Ram's that shitty? I am 100% confident the clutch was installed correctly ( I did it). What do you think?

Either his driving, or bad installation (not adjusted right) or bad out of the box... I don't think even the worst clutch would fry that fast, even with a bad driver.

Ram's are not bad at all. My transmission builder recommends them for high HP applications..Something was out of adjustment or he can't drive.

possibly not adjusted properly, grease or oil, any number of things. Glazed over friction material...

Ram makes good products tho, from my expierience.

Hmmm, I suppose it could have been his driving??? I did some more research and it's about 80-20 for people approving of Rams. I sprayed the pressure plate down with carb cleaner before I installed and wiped the clutch down with paper towels to get anything off of it before I installed. We did have a problem with his clutch cable though, he bought a quadrant out of an 96 and a cable for a 94. He drove it like this for a day and it was a bitch to get in gear. Bought a cable for a 96 and everything was cake. I guess that one day of driving it could have done quite a bit of damage....???

sounds like it wasn't adjusted properly so during hard shifts it would burn the clutch. New clutch and a new steeda quadrent and adjust it properly, FTW

Just an FYI I do not recommend spraying the pressure plate down with carb cleaner. I use brake clean for shit like that.. some carb cleaners leave a residue after they evaporate & Brake clean does not. might not be a big deal but thats what i do

don't you have to pussy clutch it for the first 500 miles on stage 1 clutches and 1000 on stage 2 and 3 clutches?

That happened to me. I have the ram clutch too. I took it all apart and it was slipping because there was oil in there from my oil pan gasket leaking

That sucks, clutch jobs aren't fun. Especially when you're doing it with a guy who just had shoulder surgery

Ram clutches are pos in my opinion I had a ram stage 1 clutch and it was heavy and started slipping when I sprayed it, went with an act stage 1 and its light grabs hard on motor or nitrous and is rated jigher than the ram, I'm using It with a steeda quick release clutch quadrant, a firewall adjuster and works perfect

Maybe you just THINK you know what you are doing?

Maybe you'll find the issue when you change it, as in an oil leak or something. You did put a pilot bearing in the crank when you did the swap right? Not sure if that would cause anything, but that's all I could think of. I used a ram before with good results. Pedal was lighter than whatever was in the car when I got it. Good luck, but I think you'll like the centerforce better. Aftermarket quad adjuster kit FTW though.

I would have to agree with the all of the above, I had nearly the same thing happen w/my new centerforce. While I sat in the staging beams @ 5k rpm the clutch was getting cooked which rendered it useless on the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts in the 1/4 mile. Readjusted the bulkhead adjuster, drove it for a good couple months on the street and last time at the track, no problems from the same clutch. Make sure you get that thing adjusted!

He did mention that his rear main was leaking a little, so that could be the issue...
