TFS Stage 1 Cam Install/Parts Help Please
Stock 302 w/ 355 gears, hurst shifter, H pipe, and flows and CAI. Daily Driver. Not looking for a track car.
After a bunch of reading I've decided I'd like to install a TFS Stage 1 Cam (Vs one of the Ford letter cams). It seems you maintain your normal fuel economy and drive-ability. I know I really need to do a new intake, but at the moment, the stupid truth is, I want the cam sound, so it's going to be first. I will most likely end up doing the Explorer intake and TB or Corbra Intake. That'll be 3-4 months down the road. After that, I will be doing a set of heads. Again, crap order, I know. Anyway... from what I can tell excluding gaskets, if I get the TFS 1 Cam and a set of TF Springs that should be all I need correct? It seems I can keep the stock rockers....are the stock lifters roller lifters? Thanks for the help! |

Stock lifters are roller lifters. You can use stock push rods and rockers. Wont be optimum, but they will work fine.

Wow...quick!- Thanks! I'm going to do the heads last after the Intake, so I'll obviously do rockers etc then.

pretty much all you're going to be gaining here is the cam sound. with stock heads you wont pick up many, if any, horsepower, just because the stock heads are such a choking point. i would highly suggest saving and saving until you can afford a set of gt40's before you do the intake. just my 2 cents. but yes you should be ok with stock everything except springs.

your need a timing cover gasket set ,engine coolant and engine oil and a filter, intake gaskets. I would replace the lifters and pushrods and timing gear set and chain, plugs and a thermostat if it was mine, but thats just me. your need a timing light to time it up when your done as well

I'd do it now, but the main thing happening is struts, springs, new rack and pinion, ball joints, a whole slew of bushings, end links, and a paint job. I'm just adding a cam swap to that vs swapping my exhaust out. Also, 89LX thanks for the detailed break down of add'l parts. It's been 9 years since I did a cam swap, and last time it was lifters, rockers, rods etc on an LT1, this will be much easier. |

89 made a good point you may want to consider putting a double roller chain in at the same time, you can get a good comp cams one for around 50 bucks and they're cheap insurance.

Also, though many people always say you won't gain much, you will gain some. And that will multiply and add up as you do more. Not a bad thing overall. Plus, since the Stage 1 is a split cam vs. all the letter cams, once you do exhaust (since factory sucks) then you will reap more benefits there too.

my turbo car before the turbo and shit I did a tfs stage 1 cam with matching tfs springs.. everything stock except for tfs street intake, shortie headers, x pipe, catcback, 3.73's with front swaybar unbolted/hanging, weld draglites with mt drs and shit was consistent 13.0's but was reliable and fun as shit to woop on. had to retime the car twice to clear up a hard start issue after the cam/spring install though. |
