302 rebuild, need opionions.

Currently rebuilding a 302 that came out of a bronco. I'm putting the motor in an old CJ Jeep so I did away with the EFI. Obviously the intake and carb will be needed, but what else will be needed? Distributor and fuel pump?

I believe the stock horsepower was about 180? I'm looking to get at least 250 with the intake carb cam headers and heads. What is my best option as far as the heads? Bolt on some used gt40 heads or get some work done to the stock heads?

dont waste your time with the stock ones, pick up a set of exploder heads if you are just doing a budget build it should get you pretty close to your goal.

I also heard that the edelbrock performer intake will not work with the gt40p heads. Is this true?

gt40p heads are a pain because of the spark plug angle just go with the regular gt40 heads and save yourself the hassle

A little more info on the 302 would be helpful. A roller block is definitely preferred, because then the gt40p heads and valvetrain would essentially bolt up. p heads also do not have exhaust gas ports on the back like many stock efi motors for the air pump system. If you have a non-roller block, you should be able to use the p heads but you may have to get custom length pushrods depending on the rocker arm setup. With a mild cam (under .500 lift int/exh), a decent dual plane intake, a 600cfm carb, small-tube headers, and proper timing you should meet or exceed 250hp. The spark plug issues with p heads generally comes from header fitment. Look for stock 5.0 mustang headers if you cant reach the plugs. I'm not sure about adapting the efi distributor.
Good luck

First off, how do i tell if i have a roller block? And are there any performance differences between the gt40 and gt40p heads?

If you have a roller block, you will see a "spider retainer" and dog bone shaped guides between adjoining lifters. If the block is disassembled, you will see two threaded bosses in the lifter valley that the spider retainer bolts to. Gt40 heads are definitely easier as the spark plug angle is compatible w/ all other sbf heads, but they tend to be harder to find. I'm sure gt40x heads have bigger valves than p heads, but p heads have small combustion chambers. (58cc) This will bump the compression a bit. Try for gt40s, but go with gt40p if you can't find a reasonably cheap set.

No i dont have a roller block then. Will the gt40 heads still bolt up and edelbrock intake? What is my best option here.

Can anyone confirm that the edelbrock rpm intake or performer intake bolts onto the gt40p heads?

bolts on yes ports lining up perfectly, no. But 98% of people with 5.0s who put aftermarket intakes dont check anyways

Don't listen to this, the p heads will work fine, just have to use different spark plug wires, big deal.

What is a good mild cam to go along with the gt40p heads?

tfs1 or AFMn41 seem to work well for ots cams
