Alternator Woes

So driving i saw that my volt guage was reading just above 9volts .. So i take it to auto bone .. They test my bat and it was good .. Next they checked my alt and they said it was charging 15volts .. The sun was starting to go down so i start driving home .. On The way i had to put my parking lights on and watched my guage .. It was staying at 9volts .. I get behind this slow ass where the speed limit was 55mph .. I was 5 miles form home so i blew past him and did 100mph for a quator mile and saw that the vots where up to 11 .. As i got closer home they went back to 9 volts .

I Took off the alt and its a Motorcraft 7735-10

I noticed that some1 had been in the wires at one time .. I found that there where 2 yellow wire connectors on 2 black wires wtih a red line on them. I did see where they looked burnt a little where i guess the got really hot at one time . I took them off and put new ones on and wrapped them with black electural tape and 4 extra insulation i used some Wire conduit and wrapped them with elec tape ..

While i had the alt off i took it to auto bone and had it checked .. They told me it was good . I put it back on and now im back at the same place . Its showing 9volts .

I do have 2 amps in the trunk that are pushing 300 + if that helps any ..

any ideas

Were your gauge lights really dim? If not maybe the gauge is wrong

if ur having slight power surges...like you interior lights dim and brighten sometime when u rev the motor ....then its your alternator...get a fatter alternator bro...cant think of and performane alts. off the top of my head but do some research
cause mine doesnt take kindly to a regular old alt either...

The stangs lights did have a slight power surge sometimes and then it stopped. The car sat 4 a month while i was going through Spedo guages be4 i found one that did not jump . my old 140 speed guage was going bad . So i bought 4 be4 i got a good one .. What fun .. drove it 4 two days on the road and now the volts are down .. Im looking 4 a higher amp alternator right now .. I just hate to cut the wires 4 a new one but i will do what i must .. I like things to look nice and clean and do it the right way once ..

Even if the alternator is good they still suck. I had got a stock replacement and my gauge would never go up to halfway. So 2 weeks later i did the 3g upgrade. Looks pretty stock to me

Don't rely on the gauge, put a multimeter on there and see what it's at. Check it at idle, then check it at idle with all the accy's on, then check it the same way at about 3000 RPM and post up what you get.

Replace that entire pigtail connector with a new replacement one before it catches on fire. Don't just "twist" and tape the new pig tail wires onto the existing wires either because it will fail. Far too many amps go through those wires for that. Electrical solder and heat shrink would be ideal but good quality butt connectors with some dielectric grease would be okay. They should have the pigtails in the electrical isle at Advance and probably Auto Zone too. They do and will burn up and happened to both of my foxes. Also make sure the spade connectors on the alternator where the pigtail plugs in are clean and shiny as well. That pigtail connector and the two black wires that merge into one black wire and runs to the battery is a complete freaking hack job by Ford and once it gets a little bit corroded and gets some resistance, it can easily burn up from the current flow. No amount of electrical tape will prevent that. You may also find that may be part of your voltage problem (assuming you checked it with a real volt meter and not just the dash gauge).

If you are going to a 3g, ignore all of the above. The 3g has a stud terminal for the power wire connection (much better design than the pigtail on the 2g) and you will be running a new wire to the battery anyway.

search for junk yard fox mods to find threads on what cars have the 130amp 3g (not the 95 amp one) if you look at the altinator in the pic in post# 7 , the section in the casing at the 12o'clock position has two holes in it. thats a 130amp 3g. if it has four holes their its a 95amp 3g. doint go and give the parts store a $100 bucks for a stock alt. go to the bone yard and p/u a 3g and do the swap. doing the swap right involves running a new ground wire anyway so you might kill two birds with one stone

Hey, I'm new here but I had the same problem with my '91 GT........l had the alternator checked out twice and I bought a new battery. BUT the problem was with the fusible links which are inline with the two fat black/white stripe wires of the back of the alternator. To fix this problem I cut the two fat black/white stripe wires at the back of the alternator and ran completely new wires from those two wires to a fusible link I got off a Honda Civic in a junk yard...then ran the wires from the fusible link to the battery......It was so simple...and it cost me like ...maybe ten bucks. I must've spent more in fuel and headaches just tryin to find the problem in the first place. Basically, run new wires to the battery!!!!!and put a fuse in there!!!!!!! I used 2 fuses that added up to a total of 100 amps!!!!!! SO far, So good.
