New 5.0 owner and member intro.

Hey fellas...new guy here. Just purchased my first Mustang, an '89 GT, 5 speed. Found the forum looking for technical help and info on my car. I've always been a hotrodder and musclecar guy, but this is my first EFI car, everything else I own has big blocks and carbs...
Anyway, the car is pretty ugly, in white "ish" primer, with round sealed beam headlights "made" to fit. It does have a pretty strong engine and tight trans. Supposedly all new 8,000 miles ago.
Has just about the entire BBK catalog on it....subframe connectors, suspension arms, intake, cold air, shifter, etc, etc...you name it. There is also a "performance optimizer" made by Best Products Inc. wired in line with the MAF, which has adjustments for lean/rich at idle and high speed. I unplugged it with no noticable change in performance.
The car has idle issues, especially when first started and give it a little gas to drive, has a large "lope" or surge. Goes away after a few minutes....
I plan to address the issue soon...looks to be a common problem. There is also a strong gas smell from engine, can't see a leak, but will be pulling upper intake plenum off for a better look.
Is there a way to tell what kind of injectors it has? With as much work that's been done to the car, I'd be curious what there were....cam may be larger than stock as well....
The thing does get up and go....

I'll snap a few pics in a few days or so.

If it has the BBK intake, there is an issue with the fuel rails leaking where they connect from one side of the motor to the other. Betting that's what you have going on. I'd plan on pitching that intake on ebay, lol. Good luck with the project and ask questions when you have them. We try to help when we can, but just like any other forum, ours has rediculous people on it too that will tell you bad info.

Thanks man...I'll look into that. May get a new intake if that's the case, as long as the other stuff, like the BBK throttlebody, is compatible...

Yeah, I'm a member on quite a few forums, I'm into alot of different stuff as I have A.A.D.D....so I'm used to all the keyboard "know-it-alls"....haha..

Everything else is compatible... You may even be able to find different fuel rails for it and solve the issue. Google it and you may find some help on it.

OK...so I removed the upper intake plenum and found that the fuel rails are NOT leaking....however, there is some raw fuel residue in the upper manifold half.
How would fuel get up there? The vacuum port connecting the fuel pressure reg to manifold???

And the injectors are black with a red top....

Bingo! The FPR is leaking internally into the vac line, time for a new one. Mine went bad and in a short amount of time, it was pouring into the manifold.

Red top is a standard color for 30# injectors, if they are 30's, that is more then you currently need but will work. With your computer, the MAF has to be calibrated for the injector size, I wonder if someone used that "Performance Optimizer" thing to do that , I've never heard of that but maybe others can shed some light on that device.

Yep...that's what it's gotta be.
I put er all back together and now the check engine light is on and when I revved the engine up, it continued to rev to redline with foot off throttle. Shut off and restarted. Idled good, but when brought just off idle it still takes a bit to come back down to under 1000rpm....
I'll get 'er figugred out....haha

Well that's the thing...it "may" have been tuned....as whoever had built the engine dumped alot of coin on it. Who knows what's inside the engine....it may not idle well as the cam seems big as well.
I plan to take it to a local dyno tuner once I get it running better and have them double check things.
Thanks for the help so far fellas....
Even though it has issues, I'm diggin' it. It's a blast to drive....

That's not the half of it...there was aluminum sheeting surrounding the lights, with some PIAA fog lights and covered with expanded metal...haha.
New headlights are first on the to do list....
