opinions wanted on powerplant selection!

Hey all! I haven't owned a foxcar in about ten years, but I've been wanting another lately, so I pulled the trigger on a nice 93 lx roller. Here's the deal. I work with a guy who has a turbo'd ls camaro and he's laying down about 850 hp to the tire.(constantly brags about smoking mustangs) I am oh, so ready to deflate his ego, but I'm torn on which direction to go for power. I really want to do this N/A, with a little nitrous for insurance. I was first considering a 427w until I read about the side loading problems on piston skirts, then a 408 w, (they seem to be pretty vicious) but I want to come to the plate with a big bat, so part of me thinks I should consider big block. Stroked. The thing is I'm also going to drive on the street and I've read that the fox is too unstable with the big block. Also not sure If I can find a bell housing for a tko to a bbf....I've used a .030 windsor in a fox and loved it. I'm just at a fork in the road and can't make up my mind! HELP!

If you're looking at those kind of numbers you're going to want an aftermarket block if you go smallblock. I looked into bigblocks a long time ago and if all you want is a drag car a 460 is an attractive engine. With aluminum heads and intake they don't weigh much more than an iron headed 351, and they make big power by default. It really depends on your budget. If you're looking to go N/A smallblock and get into that neighborhood you better have deep pockets. It's certainly possible, but you'll need to spin it pretty high to do it and RPM is what breaks parts. If you go with a big bore dart 9.5 deck you can get 445 cubes and feed it some boost. With all the right parts on it you won't have any problems making 4 digit numbers. If you're wanting to go stick, you're also going to spend more than an auto at that level. Clutch alone is going to be pricey.

Hey, thanks for the input! I've been eyeballing the chp rotating assemblies and afr 225's, but the dart blocks are up there, alright. Makes me think if I'm gonna drop that kind of coin I might should consider big block. I've heard of plenty bb's pulling 800 plus on stock blocks. But, the guys from georgia in the 5.0 magazine KOTS competition ripped off a 9.88@151 pass with a twin turbo 408 and made something like 862hp. That's what I'm talking about! Thing is, I could put that big block together with a dominator carb on it in my sleep. Turbos, on the other hand are where the head scratching begins for me.

351 f4te roller block huge single turbo with a worked h/c/i, the right set up will net u enough power to eat anything, or even cooler swap in a terminater motor with a f1 procharger and some port work

Go big block stroker with a little spray. Just don't try to go flying into the curves and you'll be fine.

Thanks again for the input, guys...I really would like to hear everyone's opinion. Anyone out there figure out how to run powerbrakes with a big block yet? I've read several places the booster won't fit. Good alternatives to vacuum assist???? Btw- this cat with the camaro came in this morning bragging about killing a 900hp vette at a rolling 50. This is gonna be good.

Check out the may 2010 issue of 5.0 mustang & superfords. They did a king of the street shootout for bad a$$ street driven cars. The dude with the 408 broke the 1/4 record for the annual kots competition put on by the magazine. I know those hp numbers do look weak...it's the fact that it's a reliable streetable pump gas car that runs freakin 9's. You gotta give that props, man.

My street car runs 9s too ( on dot's ). It's a pump gas 408 with a 150 shot of nitrous. I drive my car everywhere. I've driven 2 hours to the beach and cruised Ocean city for hours on end. My car doesn't overheat and actually gets driven. I take the family to the park in my car and we've gone out to dinner and shopping many times in it . Hell, my car runs 10.80s on muscle alone so forgive me if i'm not impressed by a car with the same size motor as me with 2 turbochargers going 1/10 quicker. Oh yeah, I did 99.9 percent of the work on my car myself. I only farmed out the engine and shooting the paint. I built the car from the ground up .

Well then, that makes YOU the man I've been looking to talk to about how to make my car do that. I've built plenty of cars 100% myself, including paint. but, I haven't fooled with them in 10 years and parts and technology have changed. I am impressed, man. nice car. Would you mind giving pointers?

I'm flattered, sorry if I came off like a jerk earlier, it's just that I get so tired of hearing about twin turbo pipe dreams, every forum I'm on that's all I hear about . Everyone thinks that a turbo is the end all be all kind of world. I'm well aware of their potential and admit that they're the best power adder but my point was that you can have a quick street car without one. I'm on a super tight budget and couldn't afford a turbo or efi so that's why I did my car the way I did. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, I'm no expert on everything but I've tried a lot of different things and have had almost 2 dozen mustangs so maybe I can answer a question or 2.
