89 sputters after warm up.

Purchased a used engine that was said to be stock non Ho for 120$. Installed it and it has more power then my HO. Problem is after a few miles it loses all power after one quarter throttle almost like the key is being turned off. When I backoff it is fine. If I turn the key off and back on it can run wide open again for a minute or two. I have all emissions uunhooked and o2 sensors unhooked. The check engine goes on when I step on gas and goes off at idle.

ignition problem? maybe bad spark plug wire or ignition coil. mine had similar problems so i changed the whole ignition system.. plugs, wires, cap, and coil.. that solved my problem.. but my check engine light didnt do that..

Ill have to pull codes. The check engine light was always on with the old engine as well but stayed on. May not be the check engine light problem. As far as the spark plug wires, if i take a voltmeter on dcv and ground it, and touch the red to the wire it says HV. Im wondering if that means the voltage is comming thru the wire and its to high for the meter to read.

yeah thats not how u should test them, its not going to read voltage, you need to remove each wire one at a time and put your meter on the resistance setting, looks like a horse shoe. put one lead on one side of the wire and the other on the opposite side. when your not touching anything with the probes the meter should read OL if im not mistaken, and when you touch the ends of the wire you should get some numbers. if you read anything less than 6 ohms you need to replace the wires, normal should be anywhere from 7-10 ohms.

as for the spark plugs and ignition coil, there is ways to test them but if its a used motor your best bet would be to replace all those components. if nothing else its something that should be replaced regularly anyhow, part of your tune up. depending on if your getting name brand high performance stuff, oem parts really arent expensive at all, wires around 30, cap around 10, plugs (depends) but you can probably get the oem ones around 30. ignition coil should be about 20 bucks. that should be your base prices man, they always have better than oem but that is a bit more pricey. let me know how your spark plug wire test goes.

What cam is in the motor? Are you using the right firing order for that cam? H.O. and non H.O. are different firing order.

Thanks for the help, from some lol..

I found out what it was just from reading some ramdom posts. I read some posts on MAF and 89s. My car is an 89 and I found NO MAF lol. I think who ever owned it before me took it out and blocked off the line comming from the intake with a bolt. I did also hook up one of the O2 sensors, only one because the other is broken, and I cant seem to get the bolt to turn. Runs damn strong now, and the sputter is gone. I got a used MAF from Crazy Rayz in MD and it seems to have been the problem.

Thanks to the people who tried to help me!
