axel

Hi All!

Have a 85 Tee Top that is my wife's not her daily driver, stock motor. We were both in the car driving it around when making a turn I could hear a loud noise at the right rear of car. Got home to check brakes and all seemed ok. Found nothing other than a lot end play with the axels. There is .058 on right side and .061 on the left side end play. I removed axels found only wear at axel bearing. Have no experience with the 7.5 or the 8.8 mustang axles. This is a 7.5 Tag# S276f-3l27-7-5-5C16 Have rebuilt rear ends before last one was my 69 charger and that's been 10 years ago. Not afraid to rebuild this one. For the little we use this car and she likes her rims which is 4 bolt, just don't think a 8.8 is necessary or go with another old used repalcement. What is your thoughts with the noise? It didn't happen every time and only when both of us were in car turning. It sound llike maybe a rock had gotten between the brake shoes. It was not a high pitch it was more like a hard steel rubbing. Thinking sound was as if the axle moved to far from bearing normal area? If you all thinking it's probably axel. Where can I go to get the information to rebuild this and the parts? There was not much wear on gears much to my surprise this car had been drove hard with last owners.

Seems to me .008 to .025 would be the right end play? Noise when turning could it be clutch's wore? Is there shims? Just seems crazy to have that much end play? Has anyone had the same problem?

That seems to be about right on the end play, I don't think that's your issue. Not sure what it is, but an 8.8 is stronger and is still 4 lug, albeit a little heavier. Your choice, but I would just jump on a used 8.8 and run it.

Thank's for your inputs. Going to put it back together look for a 8.8 rebuild it. What type of oil you would use for this poor worn out axel? This poor car the whole drive train was just worn out. Put in a rebuild motor. The aod transmission works fine but reverse, it slips badly. So my winter projects were to rebuild trans. and rear end.
