Normally Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20 and a FL1-A filter from Wal-mart, 5qts bottles are $13-14 and $3-4 for the filter. No particular reason why other than its cheap. Other than that, I buy whatever oil and filter "oil change" combo deal is on sale at auto parts stores and whatever viscosity I feel like at the time. The only thing I avoid is the Fram oil filters based on some past information I've seen from people that cut them apart and analysed them. That information may be outdated and the Fram design may have changed but I still avoid them.

Oil choice is a like religion. I have no religious preference

If you're not running any serious power, there's not reason to run anything more than what you mentioned in your post. Amsoil and RP is just for different applications IMO. How many 100K miles engines we know of running regular Kendall and Valvoline crap, too many to list.

Having said that, I run Mobil 1. I will test the oil after my motor is completed, dynoed and ran for a week or so, to see how the oil holds up on 750+ HP.

I run full Synthetic Valvoline 10-30 but my motor only has 5-10k on it, and for a filter... Almost anything but Fram for same said reason. Our dd's with higher mileage get the 'high milelage' valvoline syn blend because the leak too much oil if I run full syn. The molecules of synthetic are smaller so therefore will show more leaks. I thought it was bullshit myth stuff, but it's actually true.

i run the 10w30 royal purple in my car. 9k miles on my motor and i have a lil over 400hp. although its expensive, like the guy up top said.. way cheaper than a motor, and i do agree it depends on the application, factory motor probably wouldnt be the ideal use for it, but it wont hurt it either!

ford specifies 5w29....due to the very tight tolerances in the 4.6 modular engine...if you follow the 3000 mile drain interval i am sure it really doesnt matter what you use....amsoil for me simply because i am a preferred customer and get it wholesale

I was looking for 5w29

Fords (and some others like Honda) decided to switch to 5w20 as a "universal oil" back in 2001-2003. MPG and CAFE standards were a consideration for the change. How much of the decision was based on MPG and how much was based on engine protection is still a controversy. Some cars went from a 10w30/5w30 suggested to a 5w20 suggested oil the next model year even with no engine changes. Ford even suggested some older cars that had other oils suggested in the owners manual should be switched to 5w20 as well as seen with this TSB (full TSB PDF here).

This was a huge controversy in forums back in the 2002 time frame when it happened and still argued today.

A google search for +Ford +decision +5w20 +CAFE will give you an idea of what was being discussed.

Ford published some letters later to defend the decision like this one. https://www.fleet.ford.com/FFH/Why5W...sp?News=Rental

Depends what's on sale. If I can find the 5-quart bottles of Castrol high mileage 10w30 then I go with that. If not, 5w30 or whatever I can find in the 5 quarts that's cheap.

I guess I shouldn't buy Fram anymore after hearing what you guys say. At O'Reilly all they sell is Fram or K&N... eh

For those who are smart:
The car seems to run fine with whatever I put in it, is it bad to switch between the two?

I run full synthetic NAPA 10w30 with Napa Gold filter. I am friends with the local owner and he told me it was made by Valvoline. Usually can catch it on sale for $3.29 qt.

i guess what fram put on their box is bullshit? they have these "extra guard" that supposedly filters a lot better than other oil filters. i bought into that hype.

The extra guard are different then the regular ones. The issue in the past was poor gluing on the pleats and a crappy drainback valve and design. Things may have changed
