Header Talk
Ok i have been wanting to install a set of shorty headers on my 1995 5.0 and i have been goin back and forth about it. I have read that the gains are not really worth the trouble, is this really true? My motor is stock and i want to do headers first because i have the rest of the exhaust already done. I know the sound will improve pretty good but i wanna see some good performance gains to. Also where is a good place to get good deals on headers. I cant find any used on ebay so i guess everybvody is grabbing them up. I also heard longtube headers give the most power but the reason i want to do shorties instead is because i would have to go back under and cut my x pipe and have the exhaust re-fabbed to fit and i dont really want to do that

If you have already done the rest of your exhaust you may as well finish it. The HP gain will be small since your motors stock but it will set you up for future modds, you will see higher gains as you add to your set up. you dont want your exhaust to hold you back. just my opinion

the ones for $149 arent too bad, i was lookin to stay around 100 if possible maybe go to like 120 but thats about it, and i was looking to get a used set. But the ones for $200 + are more than i really wanted to spend, i did find one on ebay. the guy said they are MAC aftermarket headers but idk about that, they look stock to me, the onky thing i did see was the little metal plate on the one which leads me to believe they are aftermarket but i cant read it

i dont know about those.... If you hold out youll find some thing other wise i think you need to set aside 200 dollars for a set minimum..... i mean you were just looking to upgrade your Throttle Body, youll see a high gain in HP with the headers then you would with a TB.

I bought a set of BBK shorties, couldn't install them, too difficult. They're still sitting in my garage..

95 has a smog tube that foxes dont, and the install is fucking easy. But you really wont notice crap, sound or performance wise, especially on a stockish motor

Those look like Mac headers to me. They have the individual flanges for each tube, and they have that silver coating that actually holds up pretty good.

Yep, Mac they are. The silver coating generally doesn't hold up well, I'd say they weren't run long. Looks like you'd need new header to h-pipe studs since there's only one on them, and new gaskets. 75 tops! Hell, I gave away my old Mac shorties, but they reguired a prybar to get bolts to line up again, lol.

Mine didn't look much worse than those after 5 1/2 years of use. I live in Tennessee though, so that might have a little to do with it. We don't have as harsh of a winter as MN.

Lol... I don't run my car in the winter. Though it got driven to storage after they salted the roads once before putting it away one year. I hosed the body off, but prolly not the motor ... maybe that did it, or went lean once and cooked 'em.

I just couldn't get anything to line up right when bolting it onto the head.

well I live in florida so i really dont have to worry about the salt...
but i did hear that the stock ones flow pretty good, i guess the omly difference is the size of the piping..if this would only be for sound it would be worth it but how much more sound will i get from bringin the stock 2 1/4 headers to the 2 1/2 aftermarket ones

You won't notice hardly any sound difference at all. The stock ones don't flow good at all, but if you're still running a mostly stock engine they're not hurting anything. The only noticeable gain you'll see is if you go with a good set of longtubes, but you said you didn't want to go that route, and there's much better places to spend the money anyway in your case. if you're looking to change the sound of your car then go with different mufflers. On a mostly stock engine, that's the route that's going to make the most dramatic change in sound... like you asked in your first post and it was answered a few times.. With a stock engine, headers aren't going to do you much, if any, good at all. With all other things being equal, most headers sound about the same.
