Engine Swap: Small Blocks or Big Blocks

hey... i have a '88 camaro w/ a 350ci right now and am tring to get rid of it..i kno i want another mustang and i've had one before...302ci w/ bout 350hp....i would rather go with a different motor this time around...well what im tryin to say it which motor in anyones opinion could be a rlly nasty motor with plenty of mods...but is still streetable...
331ci, 347ci, 351ci, 408ci, 460ci etc....something to top these 302's or 306s around here..

It really depends on what kind of numbers you want to make what you are willing to pay for gas how much you want to put in the motor etc.

A good ol supercharged 302 is always a great option!

But if you want to go N/A I would say a 351 is the most prestiged motor for us that has a large market anyway.

All motors have enough of a market to get what you want but good luck finding certain parts for a 460. You can find 302 and 351 parts everywhere though.

Both are very streetable, too.

331, 347, 408, their all going to be good motors. i would try to stay away from the big block fords. you can build a mean small block ford.

I am thinking something in the means of 393, 408, 427.

I would do a stroked out 351...best of both worlds...weight of a small block, power of a larger displacement engine....I'm going to go with a 408 once I get all of my suspension done

460 = Too Heavy and expensive, why go this route when you can build something similar that weighs less and costs less to modify?

A 351 is more than enough motor if stroked out, and once you get used to it throw boost/juice at it....if you built it correctly

thanks guys...i know u can build a rlly nasty small block ford... but i have a factory 460ci in my 89 F250..and with headers, flowmasters, injectors distributor..that thing rlly jumps...and with a shift kit in the C6 it rlly jumps hard shifting too..but rlly suxs on gas though.. as far as gas...i'll deal with that then..but i want HP #'s now..i want a little more than the 350hp i had in my other mustang...cuz that was plenty streetable..but not rlly more than say 475-500hp...at those #'s it just needs to be at the track..

Not to get on your case, but horsepower isnt much by itself! I have seen a few 450-500 hp cars run high 12s and even 13s. Pretty embarrassing if you ask me. Just be ready to get a good suspension, slicks, better axles, brakes, etc etc or all you will do is break stuff or spin your ass off and get beat by a mildly modded mustang.

horse power doesnt mean shit. my buddy fred has a 85 Mustang GT with a 306. the car made 286rwhp on the dyno and the car goes 10.70s

you can build a 347 to run you into the deep 9s in a street car if your car is set up right. another guy i know has a "show" chevy nova with a blown 454 big block chevy, the motor makes like 500 to the wheels, but the car only goes high 13s.

oh yeah deffinatly..i know that im not a newbie to this...i've actually seen a 1986 mustang GT w/ a 408ci with a little over 525hp(maybe ran 12.25) get beat by a 350hp camaro( ran mid to high 11's)....up at NE drags, suspension is a big deal...obviously though i cant do slicks...need a street car...but im prob gunna do...lower springs, shocks, struts....frame connectors...deffinatly welded...bolted frame connecters are rlly stupid...and also convert the rear end to 5-bolt for strength...

5 bolt rear end is kind of un neccessary, but you can do it if you want, i have a good set of moser 31 spline 4 lug axles that work fine, lowering springs will probably hurt your 60' times, they make street slicks for street cars, i run them, and yes suspension is the ticket. 5.0 fox bodys go high 12s with the STOCK motor with someone who knows what their doing.

yea i know wat u mean...5-lug little unessasary...but then it comes down to its a street car...so looks matter a little bit...and way more options for the 5-lug rear ends..also i've heard of drag radials with a slick on the center of the tread...but are actual tires w/ a slick street legal...u kno cops...yeah...and a driver rlly will make the difference!!!

460 hands down if you have enough money to build it. Cubic inches equals horsepower but the parts are alot more expensive for 460s. The extra weight of a big block means nothing when you are making 800 horsepower.

Even on a budget, a 460 is the quick ticket for some really nice torque numbers.
