fuel tank probs

the guy i got my stang from said he had just put a fuel pump in the car. the fuel guage does not work, and after seing the wires wire nutted with yellow house wire nuts (seen this while running my battery cable to the trunk)i can only imagine why i pretty much fill it up after every days trip. more than once when i havnt filled it up in a trip our two the car will cut out around a curve(very hilly and curvy around here) going strait to the gas station and filling up fixes the problem. the only weird thing about that is the car only will take about 9 gallons to fill up. that means its cutting out with like 6 gallons in the tank wtf! this happend a few times when i first got the car and hasnt happend in a while because i stay on top of keeping the tank full.any sugestions? i think i allready know i will probly have to drop the tank to investigate, but that sucks,no garage, start of winter, and if im going to drop this damn tank it's going to cost some coin i doint have right now for a high perf pump, sending unit ect.... has anybody else had this problem?

If I were to guess, I would say that he's got the fuel pump too high in the cage somehow As far as the sending unit, he may have forgot to plug that back in on the tank... Ask me how I know, lol

I do it nice, cuz I do it twice, hahahaha

Don't forge the three 10mm bolts at the filler neck. 8mm on the filler neck holding bracket under the car, and 14mm (I think) on the tank straps. Blow off or vacuum the area around the locking ring before and after you loosen it to avoid getting dirt in your tank. It's cake. You may or may not want to get a new filler neck grommet before you do this too, sometimes they tear during the process. They are 1/2 the price through Latemodel than at the dealer, but that's if you are ordering other crap too since there will be shipping charges.

it's just weird that the car starts cutting out,and then only takes 9 gallons to fill it. that should leave 5-6 gall that was in the tank. it's hapend a few times and i'm shure that it's the fuel cutting out. cuts out only making a hard quick turn,or hitting a hair-pin curve(three of them between my house and the main rd),but drive straight its fine.

DROP THE TANK. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE PICK UP, OR YOU HAVE A HALLACIOUS DENT IN YOUR TANK. Clear enough?

It's easy to do and doesn't take much time at all. You can always drop it again at a different time to change the pump. I bet you can have that tank sitting on the ground in 20 minutes with hand tools and a floor jack

Sending unit is prolly done. You can use an ohm meter on the sending unit and raise and lower it. You should see a smooth fluxuation in the ohm reading. I believe this will help Auto Meter

thats kind of funny you used autometer, because my car is technically an 81 but its got 88 everything minus interior on it, and the gauges are all autometer gauges

Sounds like the baffles in the tank are broke. They form a wall around the pick-up for that exact reason, when you go around turns, fuel doesn't slosh away from the pick-up and cause the car to stall. I've had a tank do that once before and when I took it out and shook it, you could hear the baffle knocking around inside the tank.

thats more along the lines i was thinking also. like i said it starts doing this when there is (should be if its a 15 gallon) 6 gallons still in the tank! i might just wait on investigating this till i have the money to put a new high flow pump and new cage and sending unit (maybe a new tank) in the car. i'm a roofing sub-contractor and work is getting slim right now. as long as i keep the tank full it never happens
