Hatch Release Button Question

I just have a question about my hatch release button in my 93 gt. When I bought the car, it didn't work, and I could open it using the key. I wondered about the button, and after some research, i pulled the glove box out and found that the button and wire harness for the hatch release was not connected. I plugged it in, and the hatch release button works when the ignition is in the on position. Now that the button works, I cannot open the hatch using the key. The key will go in the lock and turn, but nothing happens. In order to open it i have to get in the car, insert key in ignition, turn ignition on, and then push the button. Is this normal or should it work with the button and the key. This isn't really important, just annoying. Wondering if anyone else has ran into this. Thanks in advance...

That's not the way it's supposed to be. I can only assume its either coincidence that it happened like that, or something happened when the hatch popped with the solenoid that jarred the tumblers loose or some other mechanism in the lock assembly. Having the key on when popping the hatch is normal.

Yeah I thought it was kinda weird. I figured it wasn't supposed to act like that. I don't think wd40 would help. With the button connected, the key turns almost 180 degrees in the lock. without it connected it pops the hatch before it turns 90 degrees. Its almost like with the button connected the key doesn't catch the latch mechanism at all. But oh well. As long as she still goes fast

Wait, did you unplug the button again to see what happened and then you could open it with the key again? If that's the case, then there's definitely an issue with the solenoid or solenoid wiring that will cause a battery draw.

Take a multimeter and check if there's power on the trunk release wire. It should not have any until you press the button. But it does sound like the solenoid is bad.

Ok, then nevermind. I was going to say that the solenoid was partially engaging with the button plugged in which would explain the key issue, but thats probably not the case because that would have to be a very odd set of circumstances for that to happen and would be a very rare thing to happen. It's most likely what I mentioned earlier that the jerking motion from the solenoid just jarred something loose in the locking mechanism.
