h-pipe vs x-pipe
90 lx manual 5.0
i am currently replacing my exhaust from headers all the way out. i have the flow master super 44s mufflers and bbk shorty headers. i deciding whether or not too get an off road h-pipe or x-pipe. its 2.5 tubing is there a difference on a h-pipe or x-pipe? sound or performace purposes |

i have an off road h pipe but i want to go with the x pipe i got the h pipe free so i cant complain. ive heard the x pipes give more power but idk for sure i dont know anyone who has proved it on the dyno. but i wouldnt go with true duals. the h and x pipe help balance out your exhaust flow

I like the H-pipe sound on the 5.0s the x-pipe sounds well w/ the 4.6 mod motors IMO

H is deeper, X is raspier, supposedly the X can show a couple more horse gain in the higher R's, but I couldn't tell ya to be truthful

These cars are true dual exhaust, the h or x is just an equalizer. Jay Allen did some experimentation with this at one point and said that h, x, and no equalizer pipes didn't make any changes on a dyno, but having no equalizer pipe at all seemed to pick up a small bit consistently at the track. This was on one specific test car so it may have been just that combo that liked no equalizer but the point it that they're all pretty much the same performance wise, and sound is about the only difference you're going to notice. I've had both and like mentioned above, the x sounds raspier and the h deeper. I personally didn't like the sound of the x and sold it for that reason.

after a few cars with h's and now two with x's.. my vote is for the x pipe. coupled with the right mufflers sounds very nice

so thats the only reason people dont use true duals is because its doesnt equalize the sound do x and h pipes give you more power then true duals ?

"True duals" is two seperate pipes from the engine to the exhaust tip. You can have true duals with or without an H, X pipe. I don't know many people at all that run a fox without an H or an X. For the few that I did, there was no logical or measurable technical reason why they did not run one. Something that is NOT true duals is where the exhaust splits at some point from one to two, like after a y pipe or something. You have two exhaust tips but a single muffler and/or a single cat. Bottom line, there is a point where all the exhaust runs through a Y and a single pipe for some considerable length somewhere. On a Mustang with an X or H pipe, that does not happen, they are true duals.

The equalizer pipe doesn't do anything for performance as far as I've seen anywhere, in fact it almost seems to hinder it very slightly from what I've seen. Like nolife said, the term "true dual" has nothing to do with the pipes meeting with an equalizer pipe or not, but the fact that there is two pipes from the manifolds/headers back and not anywhere where they "Y" together and the exhaust from both banks travels down the same pipe. Equalizer pipe or not it's true dual if it has both pipes all the way back.

Does the x or h keep the computer happier in any way, shape, or form? As Centipede was pointing out about older cars not having them, they also are usually carb'd. Just for curiousity's sake, since I'll always run an equalizer of some sort.

Nope, the o2 sensors are upstream of the equalizer pipe from the factory, the computer wouldn't know the difference if it was in there or not.

o well i dont have a h or x mine doesnt touch the hole was back and thats just what the exhaust shop by my house gave me when i dropped off my mufflers i took it in there with open headers and they just made it pipes strait back and the only difference ive seen with it from an x or h is its a lot louder maybe the x or h help to lower the loudness
