Fuel pressure regulator install
Just installed my new Aeromotive regulator and an Autometer electronic fuel pressure gauge. What a PITA. I did not realize I'd have to remove the upper intake to get access to the back bolt of the regultor. Maybe there was an easier way but either way...
For the first hour or so of running and trying to adjust fuel pressure, I had no luck at all. Fuel pressure was all over the place with even really small adjustments, I also noticed the pressure was rock solid and not changing with vacuum, basically, the indicated fuel pressure was the same with or without the vacuum line attached and stayed that way even after driving around for a while. Finally assuming either the gauge or the regulator was jacked up, I gave up. Today I took the car for a ride to the store. When I came out of the store, it was working great and the pressure was changing with vacuum. I then made some fine adjustments to get the base pressure where I wanted it and it seems to be working fine now.
Question 1. Do I have a problem or is something like this normal because of maybe trapped air in the regulator or pressure sensing lines from the swap out?
Question 2. The bolts I removed from the original regulator I had on there had some form of thread locker on them. I used lock washers instead. Should I redo them with thread locker?
A note of interest. I attached the sending unit of the pressure gauge directly into the FPR sensing port but it does not really fit well because the flats of the nut come in contact with the flats of the vacuum line adapter directly above it. This occasional contact as your tightning the sensing adapter limits where you can stop tightening it. I needed about 1/4 turn more to make it tight enough to not leak and I could not do it. I solved the problem with a 1.5 inch 1/8inch NPT extention pipe which provides the clearance I need. I can not use my fuel line shrader valve because my inlet pipe for my supercharger is in the way.
A second note of interest. I like the Autometer Ultralight II gauges. Look nice and not ricey looking and they dim nice when you attach them to a dimming source from the dashboard lights. I was unsure between them and the Sportcomp II and I think I'd would be happy with either one.
