About Gears & Cam Question

First, why do I see on some posts that some poeple actually downgrade the gears like from 4.10 to 3.73. I personally what 4.10 or 4.50

Also, I am looking for a good cam. A nice big one that will give me that drag car sound but also produce power as well. Also don't want to hit the piston but I was something nice.

The cam part is all on you guys, whatever you say get Imma get because cams are the hardest thing for me to catch.

Thanks.

Too much gear can be a bad thing because the engine will run out of steam before you reach the finish line. People with power adders will step down in gearing. On a nitrous engine you can't have the best of both worlds for example. The car is either going to run really good on nitrous or really good on motor only....not both. A serious nitrous car will have a really tight torque converter and tight gearing as well to meet the needs of the added horsepower of the nitrous. But with the tighter gearing the car will tend to be turd on motor only. The goal with gearing is to cross the finish line a few hundred rpm over your peak horsepower rpm.

As far as the cam goes, you will need to give us some more info. Cubic inch, what heads, intake, transmission, gearing, etc.

302, Stock Heads, Edelbrock Torker II Manifold, 5 Speed Tranny. Whatever the "etc" is, just a stock motor with what's listed on my description or profile. and above.

Don't go any bigger than the TFS part number 51402000 until you upgrade cylinder heads.

i personally went with 3.73 becasue the car is more driveable that way. in my 97 cobra i had wth a vortech, i would have to shift into second so quick. and it didnt really cost me any time on the 1/4 mile. maybe a 1/10th. but the first gear onyl went to something like 15-17 mph. it was way to short. and the car topped out at something like 140. pathetic. but anyways that s why i downgraded from 4.10 to 3.73. its a lot more livable

i had 4:10 on my old fox with a 5 speed and it suck big time gas mileage was garbage and it had shit loads of power down low but really die at the top for a 5 speed street car i would not go more than 373
