4 Wheel 5 lug disc brake conversion on a budget under $500 FOX BODY
If you are on a budget and own a fox body and you want change it over to 5 lug and disc brakes all the way around it's not that hard to do. I changed mine over and had less than $500 in everything including new pads drilled and slotted zinc plated rotors. If you want to go with the cobra brake kit and spend the $2800 bucks This is not the thread for you.
Here's what I did,, Look in the paper and Craigslist and find some of the guys that buy junk cars or haul them away for free. Some of these guys really work hard for there money and when the car is on it's way to the crusher $100 to $150 will buy a lot of parts. I found a guy that let me strip a 95 V-6 and get everything I needed for $100. Just call a few of them tell them what you are looking for and Wait. (took two months for me) Or eBay can be your friend also. Don't be afraid to wright a letter to people on eBay asking them for Pacific parts. I'm told the 94-95 is the best for the swap-I used a 95. Pull the axles and everything brake related off the rear end. --Note take some containers for for the nuts and bolts. On the front end pull the spindle from top to bottom complete. And save the rubber lines and clips that hold them in place. When you install them you will need to use washers or install 94-95 ball joints--The tower nut on the fox bodies ball joint is taller. I went with new ball joints so I don't know how the washer thing would work out. I'm told they fit just fine. You will need one brake line adapter that NAPA stocks- for the front I forget the part number but it's posted in many threads. Save All the emergency brake cables and the bracket that's spot welded under the hump it holds the ends of the cables in place. - you can use self tapping screws to hold it in place or stop in a muffler place and they can spot weld it for you--I was told that I would need to modify the emergency brake handle to work with disc brakes. Instead being my lazy self I took the complete set up out of the 95 and it bolted right in my fox. Ball joints and pads --Auto Zone-- Rotors-- lay low and keep an eye on eBay I bought all four rotors drilled and slotted zinc plated for $100 w/ shipping. I could go on for ever about all the little things like brake lines master cylinders and brake boosters but this is the basic jest of things. Do a little home work or just ask. The 94-95 brakes are a lot bigger than the stock fox body and there is a huge improvement in braking ability with this swap. Note: I'm told other years of mustangs will work for the swap but you run into spindles and axles that make the wheels stick out to far I don't know about that for sure never tried it I stuck with 94-95 parts. my rear wheels came out about 1/4 wider on each side worked out nice with a wide tire. kept it from rubbing on the inside I hope this helps someone out.
