Check engine light and idle problem

Ive got an 88 5.0 and its been shutting off at idle lately. i know ive got a lifter tapping but i dont think that would cause it. it will idle kind of high untill i tap the gas then it will go down lower and after 10-20 seconds start trying to choke down but if i hit the gas it wont shut off. I also have a check engine light which may be related?

First thing I'd do is get the codes out of it and go from there.

mine was doing something similar after i changed my valve covers (had to pull the upper intake in order to get to them) found i forgot to plug in a vacuum hose... but that wouldnt make the check engine light come on i dont believe.

i checked the vaccum lines they are all fine
