Convertibles....yes or no?
I found a great fox body 5.0 with a Ford Racing Crate Engine and a T-5 trans, all with a little over 1,000 miles. Yes, 1,000 on the engine! My parents are interested in getting it for me, with both my money and theirs, and it is 8,000 OBO. It is in wonderful shape, at a dealership, with a dealer warranty. The only problem is its a convertible. I really wanted a hatch, even a notch over a convertible....but is it really that bad? My impression is that they are slower, heavier, and tend to be annoying in the winter (bad insulation) as well as break all the time....but is it all true? Will it still be fast? Can it burnout and everything, and drag race as well? It might just be too good to pass up....I also found a car with a Paxton Novi 2000 which is a hatch and is real nice for 5000. Thats what I really want but this one is so clean....my parents may not let me pass it up. Thanks for any advice!

Well i was put in the same position found a fox for a great deal, i couldnt turn it down. Its a vert and it had a auto at the time. but for as much as i thought i didnt like verts, i love mine. I dont know where you live but idk how much your going to be able to drive it in the winter, i wouldnt ever attempt to drive mine, its in too nice of shape salt and shit here in michigan would just rot such a beautiful car away. My top has never broke, the pump broke, but i just deleted the cylinders/pump/wiring/plumbing and made it manual.

Thanks for the reply, and yeah I live in North-Central New Jersey. I probably wouldnt drive it in winter, but it still stays cold here all the way into March, and there isn't always salt. I plan on taking care of the car, washing it and such to keep rust away. But I am wondering if the insulation is really a problem. And I wouldnt be able to convert mine to a manual top (I am not good at tinkering with those kind of things) but is it difficult to maintain? Thanks again!

well, mine doesnt have any insulation on the top and even on chilly nights the heat still worked. well what do you mean by maintain? will you be changing your own oil and such? or are you talking about just genearl taking care of a car maintaining? just cleaning a car is easy.

The heater in my car works great. And the maintenance to the vehicle is not that different than a hard top car. I hate the rear window...it zips in at the top of the glass. And it is difficult. The trunk is super small...can't fit too much stuff in it when the top is folded down. FYI ... Quality and original convertible tops come with a glass back window, lots of replacement tops have a plastic window because the plastic type are less expensive than the glass, The plastic WILL crack after a couple years...It is difficult to replace the top.

This is the hatch. It looks NICE. But buying from an owner is a huge risk over a dealer..... |

If I could go back in time, I would get a hard top. I don't have a garage and the 1/4 window motors can be a pain to get to if they go out. My 1/4 window on the driver side popped out of the piece that holds it and it will be a shitload of money to replace because of the access to even get to it. So my top stays up all the time just to hold the window in
Also when it rains a little bit of water can get in and really make the car smell musty. Kinda like if you forget your clothes in the wash for a couple of days. They are heavier so it takes more power to do the same as the lighter models and that carburetor is going to hurt MPG which is something to mull over with the gas on the way to over $4.00 again. Don't get me wrong, that is a very nice car and it looks like a nice weekend cruiser, but I would not even think about it for a daily driver or if you are sans garage.

8000 is wayyyyy to much for a fox unless its been 100% been gone through, everything replaced and repaired and making crazy power
:edit: plus buying from a dealer is bs since your going to probly be paying close to 10k with the warrenty costs and sales tax if not more with a 8k sticker price |

Buying private > buying from dealer - any day of the week. The only plus on dealer is if you have 'lemon law' but you pay way more than necessary. The first car without proof of mileage on motor and trans and receipts is a 5k car. Lowered the value by pulling EFI off of it. AND DON'T DRIVE IN WINTER. If they salt the roads at all, it's still there till first big rain. I won't bring my car out till after that. There are too many cracks and crevices for the salt to get into, and they don't call them Rustangs for nothing. That and the fact that they are useless in the snow. Had to bring one of mine out early once when I broke my DD. Worthless... That's what your Jeep is for. I get 6 months a year with my car. It sucks sometimes, but the downtime is for making it bigger/better/faster/stronger. And keeps mileage down.

Also, I pulled a motor to completely regasket it in a F150 that I had once. I cleaned and painted everything since it was apart. Sure looked rebuilt when I sold it... Could be the same thing here!

I dont really care for VERTS, they have alot more body flex and there heavier, there still nice but they would be my last choice when it comes to mustangs. $8000 not a good deal. for $5000-$6000 you can get a nice mustang that will leave that vert in the dust....Im not knocking any one that has a vert im just giving my opinion

I specifically sought the vert. It HAD to be a vert. Otherwise it is just another car..... I wanted something different and it draws more attention. It's not an annoyance to me and the wife actually was more supportive in me buying it because it was a vert. The price may be a bit high, but it depends on where you live. Here in upper midwest foxes in prime condition (never seen salt) are rare so the prices are higher. My heater kicks out and I drive it until the snow flies. But then I am an old guy so what do I know.....
