88 Mustang Needs shocks/struts

I bought the car last March and have only had to do a few minor things with it. Waterpump tire ignition switch. But the ride is rough as hell right now and was advised to get shocks/struts lesschwab quoted me at around 454$ for the job. If you were in my position would you get it done. I have a leg injury and hoping this would make it ride better. And become more comfortable for me. The brand they said was kyb I believe.

This is probably what they are putting on your car. KYB 4 GR2 STRUTS SHOCKS FORD MUSTANG 87 88 89 90 to 93 - eBay (item 310276443470 end time Jan-31-11 17:59:22 PST) That leaves 300 for labor. I wouldn't pay that. You can do the rear blindfolded, and the front isn't really any harder. I assume if you were at a shop, that means you don't think that you are mechanically inclined enough to do it yourself. Not sure how bad your leg issue is, but if you can find a buddy to give you a hand you would be way better off. The rear should only take about a half hour tops, and the front about 45 minutes.

Also, they are the same one's I put on my car, but I lowered it at the same time. And since lowering the car makes the ride a little harsher, I couldn't tell you how good they are. But I can tell you this. It didn't ride worse after lowering it with those shocks/struts. So they must not be bad, but there's always better. If you have to pay to get it done, ask him how much labor that is, then tell him you'll pay him that amount if you can provide your own parts. I have a buddy that owns his own shop and he hates people that do that cuz he doesn't get his mark up on parts, but I can tell you it's a very healthy markup. If someone tells him they are providing parts before they ask for labor cost, he adds more $ in. So make sure you get him to tell you labor cost first. And I would not, under any circumstance, pay more than 1 1/2 hours labor on that. And that's like giving them a free 1/2 hour.

I have Eibach lowering springs along with my Tokico struts/shocks and it's stiff as hell. That's all I can say though, I've never compared with other brands.

I looked at the paper quote they handed me, it's marked as 89.95 for the labor another 90$ for an alignment. 200$ for Parts + taxes. I wonder if I can do it myself though. I did the ignition switch and stuff so maybe I should just wait and try it out.. If all else fails I suppose I could just take it into a shop if I fail.

If you didn't need an alignment before, you won't need one after. Replacing the front struts doesn't change caster/camber. That plate is locked in place and the strut centers itself in it.

Really ? Ive always been told that when you change your front struts an alignment is the next thing you do

Yeah they stressed the alignment pretty hard to me. How do you tell if you need to replace the springs.

Springs can wear out, but I would say if they aren't broke, just let them be. And as far as the alignment... Many vehicle's yes, but not this one. The way it bolts on makes it pretty impossible to be off. Maybe a fraction of a mm or something, but otherwise not really possible.

Would buying the chilton book be a good idea in this case to find out how to do it? I'm not as handy as I'd like to be.

You dont need a book to change your shocks and struts. But the book is always good to have around. I used mine all the time.

The struts are 3 bolts each and the shocks are two bolts each...

Ok, shouldn't be to hard. I'll do a bit more searching on what I'll need to do the job and hopefully post results

Nothing better than the satisfaction of doing something yourself... and keeping the money in your pocket. As Ryan said, it's simple to change these, but having a chilton's or haynes around isn't a bad idea for quick reference and not having to search through lots of bs on the internet to find what you're looking for.

Went to napa today and ordered the haynes book, also some pins to rehang the drivers door. Once I get the haynes I'll know exactly what I need for the job. There is a possibility my uncle can help me with this also. Which would be great.
