Swaping to a 351W
I was thinking of building a 351 to put in my car in place of the 302 stock for stock what are the power numbers and as far as power increases with the same mods is there a difference? Also how much power can a stock block and internals hold? How hard is the swap into a 90 lx? I have seen in mags that you need aftermarket oil pan and special headers and motor mounts? What else?

I wouldn't think you would need new motor mounts. Didn't the 90 lx still have the Windsor 302?

If you are staying fuel injected you need a lower intake, distributer, 351 swap bracket for the power steering/ac, a 28 or 50 oz flywheel and balancer that match the motor, and a fuel system. The fuel system may only be injectors pump and MAF but that all depends on the amount of power your planning on making.

youre going to need a taller hood by about two and a half inches.. im carbeurated, so mine may be taller. your powersteering bracket from the 302 will also not work. cutting and welding will fix the problem, or you can find one from an old 351w with power steering. also, you may have cooling problems depending on the type headders you go with.. i have a 3" cowl hood and bbk ceramic headders, but it was still getting too hot. i recommend a 2 core radiator and an electric fan. if you go carb like i did youre going to need a new throttle cable (or cut yours down considerably) and the obvious like a carb (i have a holley 600) a throttle cable bracket (with kickdown if youre auto) if youre efi, im not sure if the computer will work or not.. theres a lot of wire that i cut out, almost 3lbs worth. if your carb, fuel pressure regulator (i went with an aeromotive so i can use my sock electric fuel pump) if youre carb youre going to need ignition, so a coil, distributor (i recommend hei, i have a pertronics unit in mine.. works like a champ) with the new oil pan comes a new oil dipstick... and i think im out of ideas for now. if i think of anything else ill be sure to let you know.

Google alternative auto and look in their waterbox section. I could not add the link in this message. If you are going for the smog legal, fit under the stock hood (EFI), you have two choices. You can purchase a ford racing 351 lower and mill it .40 of an inch, and get a 1993 cobra upper and mill it .25 of an inch and purchase a pair of convertible V8 motor mounts and send them to Chicane Motorsport in Torrance, CA and have them modified and dropped by .625 of an inch and there you have it. The owner (Joe) is a super nice guy and can build anything or figure out just about anything related to fabrication or modification. He has over a decade experience building Saleens and was one of the lead techs at Saleen during the s351 era. The other option is to use a 94-95 Cobra upper. You will then have the clearance you need for the stock hood. This costs you a little for the machining and such, but its well worth it for me when it comes to looking stock and killing the chevy's.
