I have an idea to test if its a Ground Issue

OK so Lets say my battery doesn't have a good ground, I was thinking while doing a convoy this morning, I can take a jumper cable, hook it up to the neg battery terminal, and then ground it out on a good bare part of my frame and see if thats the issue..

Only thing it wont explain is my guages taching out to the right... When I get home I will throw the dash back in the car and try it. I want this car to run so I can do a few more track days before I deploy... I think I can hit 12.9 as is right now and really wanna do it. that 13.02 had me excited and I didnt even foot brake it...

Tim

meh. I GUESS it would work if that cable itself is the issue.

Yeah, thats what I mean, I have the Neg on the battery grounded to the radiator support.. But would a ground issue cause the guages to act funny...

Ground issues can cause all kinds of different problems. Jumper cables isn't a great idea. They aren't that great of a connection at the clamp. Why not just get a few feet of 4Ga and some connectors from a stereo shop and make a couple new grounds. One from the block to the frame and one from the frame to the battery. Should cost you maybe $20-$25 at the most and it's good piece of mind. If you do it, make sure you don't over tighten the bolts, and sand the area down to bare metal for the connections, then paint over it when you've made the connection.

I just had the gauges on a truck I just bought doing all kinds of odd stuff. I found that the grounds to both of my batteries were loose. Re-did them and my gauges work fine now.

Not saying this is definitely your issue, but it's never a bad thing to have a solid ground and it doesn't hurt to try.

why is the battery grounded to the radiator support?!!?!?

timing cover is stock, but you can move it over to the motor mount for a much better ground. thats where mine is.

no wonder your junk is acting up.

I couldn't for the life of me remember where the battery was grounded in the engine bay after I moved it to the rear of the car. I will move it back to the block tomorrow... Would the motor mount work right where the strap is for the block ground to the frame?

You need two grounds. A ground from battery to chassis and a ground from block to chassis. If you ground the battery to the block and have no other ground then you're relying on the engine mounts as a ground for the chassis of the car. The absolute best way to do it is to ground the battery to the frame and the block to the same point on the frame. This will eliminate any potential ground loop.

I already have Ground straps from both sides of the engine on the engine mounts to the chassis and then I had the battery grounded out on the lower part of the front Clip there right by the radiator support. I am now going to ground it to the block sense that seems to be the best way.

I use jumper cables to diagnose ground issues all the time. Grounds are your friends....
Did you know adding grounds to a wrx will actually increase the HP? It's one of the their free mods. I usually use atleast two grounds straps from the chassis to the motor and two grounds from the battery to the block.

how in the balls would an extra ground on a WRX increase power.

and now that im thinking about it. I might just add a ground to the subframe connectors now that the trans and everything is out. motor will be out this weekend.

Why would you run a ground from the battery to frame, then from the block to the "frame"???

I don't see the problem with running a ground from the battery to the motor mount, then from the motor mount to the subframe connectors? or is there a issue?
