recommended stock HO rebuild kit? ('90)

Hi--
Looking for a basic rebuild kit, gaskets, bearings, rings, and a double roller timing chain. And an oil pump-- why not.
Pistons themselves are solid and to spec.

There are dozens of options from all sorts of vendors, so it's hard to choose.
I've been told that "meh, doesn't matter-- just go to napa"

But figured I'd ask on this forum first for your experiences, and if there's a vendor you'd particularly recommend, and vendors you would run from :-)

thanks!
-Bernard

summit sells pretty good kits.

I peiced all my stuff together from summit, and spent about $400 with everything. bearings, rings, gaskets.

$400? Im assuming you got pistons with that?

If you're just doing a stock rebuild a NAPA kit or a summit kit will be fine. If you want to do a little better than stock replacement parts, look for a kit with clevite 77 bearings. You should be able to find everything for around $200-250 or so for stock replacement stuff. If you plan on more performance down the road then get better bearings and rings. The rings should be chosen based on what type of performance you go with if you think you will go that route.

Sounds good.
What do you mean, "what type of performance"?
Well rather... if I do go for performance in a year's time, it would be for low-end torque. But how would that influence ring choice?

As far as if you're going to go with forced induction or nitrous or just a N/A setup. It also depends on how much power you're going for. If you're keeping the RPM down and not looking to go crazy, a standard ring package will be fine. If you plan on big power there's better options out there, but they do cost more.

no. $400 is with $56 EACH head gaskets, because I need wire-loc head gaskets, good rings, and bearings, and all the other little things.

assembly lube, break in oil, and a few other things like that are also included in that price.

Thanks for the parts list :-)
Yeah, I don't mind paying a little more, especially since I'm not buying pistons...
Were the $113 gaskets worth the $?

This engine won't see so much severe duty, but I would like it to see serious service life & longevity.

the head gaskets are that expensive because they are "wire-loc" head gaskets.

my cylinder heads are o-ringed. so the gaskets have a extra ring in them to match up with the head.

its ment to help not blow head gaskets when using power adders. But I got these heads for cheap, and didn't want to mill them down to get rid of the o-ring. so I have to buy these expensive head gaskets.

if you bought them for your car they wouldn't even work, because your heads are not machined to recive them.

that being said, I always recommend a high quality fel-pro head gasket over cheap stock replacment ones.
