I have a 88 lx 4 banger with a stock (besides oil pan and headers) 351w and aod and mild dual exhaust (turbo). what should i expect as far as mpg? and yes it will be a daily driver. how can i improve mpg? cold air intake? any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

same mileage the trucks get, just a little better due to the lower weight.
so probably 13-14mpg in the city and 16-17 on the highway. there not very efficient motors. about 190 horsepower, and proably 300-350 torque at the wheels. hard to say. what year and vehicle is the motor out of?

only numbers I could find:
11mpg in the city, 12 on the highway so probably 12-13mpg in the city for you, and 14-15 on the highway only horsepower rating I could find 250 BHP @ 4,600 RPM (1969-70) 177 BHP @ 4,600 RPM (1971-73) so looks like you got the weak motor

cold air intake? A 1971 351w is carb'ed, unless you converted it to EFI. 8.8 would in theory make your MPG worse, as it would create more rolling resistance. but that 351w's torque will kill that 7.5 rear end soon enough.

so an electric fan is the only way to get better mpg? what about a 2 barrel? and from what i've researched, my block is one of the stronger ones.

new to the forum probably shouldn't be calling people a loser.
Also when I'm the only one helping out, as you obviously don't know what the fuck your talking about. and yes, its a weak motor, its probably putting 150 horsepower to the tires. the block might be strong, but the motor in stock form is infact WEAK. its meant for a truck, and hauling around a huge heavy car.

You have a carb'ed motor. Don't expect to get good gas mileage. I had a 81 chevette with a carb'ed 4 banger and it suck for gas mileage. My 91 5.0 gets 10X better gas mileage than the chevette.

the 69 to 74 blocks are the most desired. they dyno at 250 to 300 hp. stock. whats that explorer motor pumpin out? 95 hp? 125 with $2000 in upgrades? dont b mad, man. just get a 351, "hardcore enthusiast".

For a newb you're running your mouth a lot. Throwing in a heavier block wont make your car much faster either. Like stated, your 71 block may be just as strong as the 69 and 70, but they lowered the compression ratio internally, making it weaker with power output. A stock block 351 is nothing to brag about. Its very common, and similar to you, its worshipped by newbs that need to get a clue. Sure, a well built 351 can dominate all. But be forewarned, so can a well built 302. It's about the parts put into the engine, not just the size of its displacement. Learn to research the facts prior to posting random bullshit, and learn to respect people that are actually giving two shits to try and help you.
