Rear End Death whine?

Hey guys so I was out cruising around yesterday and while I was on the the freeway, Every time I gave it so gas I would get the loud Whine from the rear of the car...As I am new to RWD Car's anyone want to take a stab at what it could be? It only happens in third gear and up. It sounds like gears of some sort. thanks

P.S. the forum search engine sucks, Got so many non-related hits....

You sure it's coming from the rear of the car? That sounds more like a transmission issue than a rear-end issue.

I have that same problem in my 98 Grand Cherokee though it's a 4wd. In my case it turned out to be a loose pinion

Although I know the tranny Is pretty beat up, I am almost positive it is coming from the rear of the car.

so...pull the rear end and pop that sucker open, look for worn down, chipped or strait out missing gears then?
I guess this is going to be a weekend project then.

should be interesting. I Hate working on drivelines though.

You don't have to pull the rear. Just pop the diff cover off and give it a look. Check and see what the oil looks like, see if there's any shavings in it or if it's real thin fluid. I'm not really all that good with rear-ends so I can't really tell you what to look for other than what you mentioned, but I will say that when you re-fill it, you need to add a friction modifier to the gear oil.

yea it will, I spun a bearing in my 3000gt, nothing like seeing a bunch of metal flakes in the oil.

You can also take the driveshaft loose and check to see if the pinion has any obvious play. Check fluid levels too!

I would say if it were your ring and pinion(gears) it would make the noise at all speeds just increase volume with rpm.. The gears could be setup too loose/too tight or beyond the point and needing replacement.
