Please help with the heat

I have an 88 gt conv. My Mods are on an original 302 block.I have upgraded to mass air, installed gt 40 heads w/roller rockers and hardened push rods. gt 40 intake upper and lower and an E cam. There is a new water pump and radiator but the temp keeps climbing to around 260 on normal driving, highway and street. The timing has been checked and is good. The thermostat is a brand new 180 degree. The only thing I noticed is that the overflow tank has a small crack around midway up. Could this be causing my problem or something else? Any help would be appreciated.

Did the problem start after you did the heads? Could be air in the system.

Gasket sealing has nothing to do with it. When you drain the cooling system and refill it air pockets develop. If you don't get them out you will have over heating issues. Air pockets are very common after doing a head swap and are not hard to get rid of.

What gauge are you using for the temps?
260*?

"no.....but wont suck back coolant when needed (in theory)."

If your street stang is pulling coolant from the reserve, then your in trouble on a different level.

Run the car to about 240 on the gauge, turn the headlights on full way, then get under the passenger side and see if there's any white smoke...

Let it rest, then repeat with the headlights off.

If you're not getting any smoke, then your not vaporizing your water flow.

Can your friend do a controlled environment test to see if the car begins to ping-out after you break 270?

It could just be an electrical mis-read by your gauge.

Why would you be in trouble? The closed system is designed to push coolant into the reserve tank and pull coolant back out. I don't see what "trouble" you are refering to.

If your stock parts are working, you'd be in trouble.....you'd be in the twighlight zone.
