Pull the distributor again and redrop it. Fuel, spark, air........ and TIMING. But we don't have a definitive answer on what make the car die. First guess is TFI, yes, but could be something else too. Gonna have to start simple first. Good luck and keep us posted.

yes i replaced the tfi sensor, thats the one on the distributer right? after i did that it started right up, but the timing was off cause i didnt mark the disbributer when i pulled it up. i retimed it perfect and when i put it back down it wouldnt work. of course i thought maybe i made a mistake so i tried to re-time it about 6 times. and the funny part is im a mechanic and i cant even fix my own car, so obviously im not that good of a diagnoser. but my compression is goddamn near perfect on every cylender. im getting fuel. my battery is fully charged up. and im getting spark. it just wont kick over. one mechanic told me to try to pop start it. so i hooked it up to a toe-strap. didnt work. its gotta be an electrical problem. any clues please help! pulling my hairs out. lol

What color is the spark? And what is your fuel pressure at?

I realize you're a mechanic so I know these are basic questions, but you're also sure you're on the compression stroke when you're finding TDC for cylinder 1 right? When you're doing the timing, are you pulling the spout connector?

pull pass side valve cover
watch intake valve
when you see it start to open, put a breaker bar on the crank
turn it untill the timing mark is exactly at zero
drop dizzy pointing at the number one cylinder wire, its the 2nd one over going clockwise from the clip on the pass side of the cap. If this isnt how you redropped it, its prob timing

Even easier way to find the compression stroke is to have someone crank the car while you have your finger over the spark plug hole. The compression stroke will blow back on your finger and make an armpit fart noise.

no actually im really not. im more of like a parts replacer mechanic. and suprisingly this is my first time ever having to do the timing with top dead center and everything. and i am a little confused in that aspect. i mean, i stuck a screw driver in the cylender number 1 and i had a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer and i twisted it until the piston came all the way up. is that my compression stoke when its all the way up? or am i 180 off? and if so could you give me a little bit of detail on how to do it better? whenever i did timing i just had to twist the distributer and hook up the timing gun. i never really had t reset the whole distributer to the compression stoke. i made sure the roader and the distributer was pointed at the number 1 spark plug. i made sure all the plugs were on.

thats the way I do it by myself, and no, it could be 180 out

first read this so you know whats supposed to point to zero on the balancer, alot of people get it wrong and think to look through the little hole

Either the way 93hatch or I described it are the easier ways to find the compression stroke. If you're getting the rotor pointing at the number 1 spark plug wire then you're doing that part right, but if you're at TDC on the exhaust stroke, your car won't run. Fint the compression stroke and that link hatch posted takes care of the rest of the procedure.

If you're getting spark and the spark is blue, then the TFI is probably good. I can't say I've heard of them failing where it sparks at the wrong time, but stranger things have happened. What about the PIP. There's a reluctor wheel in the distributer that is for injector timing. Do the plugs smell like gas? Have you checked the injectors with a noid to see if they're getting signal?

If you've got good compression, fuel in the cylinders and good spark, then it's either injector timing, or ignition timing. If you just messed with the fuel system and then this happened an hour later I would lean towards something in the fuel system. How did you blow out the lines? Are you sure no debris is maybe clogging the injectors?

Kind of tough to make out what you're saying. So you did all that stuff in the first post a week ago and the car ran fine for a week, then it died out of nowhere one day after driving it for an hour, correct?

As long as you have good compression across the board, then the backfire didn't damage anything. If it did, you would have had a cylinder or a few with low or no compression from a bent valve or broken rocker. You were probably too far advanced and a cylinder fired with the intake valve still open. Nothing that's going to cause it to not run.

Did you pull the distributer or loosen the clamp to replace the TFI?
