need an opinion.

Ok I'm getting ready to help a friend with a paint job. we want something to just make the car all one color. It is not gonna be perfect by any means but I was wondering. after doing all the normal prep work ofcourse. like sanding and scuffing everything, would it work out decently to just rattle can it. can you with a nice smooth and steady hand get a decent coat on the car? he is wanting a semi flat black. what are your guys opinions? could someone give me the names of some supplies that would be handy or that we'll need? I'm more mechanical that body, I've done body work before but never with a rattle can. I think it could be done but I was just seeking some advice from someone who as done it before. Thanks for your time.

flat colors or semi tend to look a little better than gloss when done with a rattle can, but honestly you are going to spend quite a bit on enough cans to do the car, I would prep it myself and then try to find a cheap paint shop and have them shoot it with a gun, it won't cost you much more than a rattle can job and if you prep it and tape everything off you can get a pretty decent job for less than a couple hundred bucks most likely. Or go to Harbor tool and frieght and buy you a gun, then to a paint shop and ask them to get you the paint and everything you need and explain to you how to mix it, and shoot it yourself. The main thing about a nice paint job is the prep work, and taping things off so you dont have overspray on everything, laying down the color is not that hard.

i rattle canned my whole '90 laser.. came out damn nice for rattle can if you can keep long single strokes and not let each pass dry too much before you start another pass.. flats like flat black tend to come out better.. also get a paint that has a fan type spray nozzle and not the circular ones..

I would ditch the rattle can Idea. It is not too expensive to buy the paint and supplies you need from a paint supply store. Ask them for Hotrod black - satin. It is designed to stand up to the weather. If you use black primer or sealer it will just be a waste of time.

R & E Paint Supply. SEM HR010, Hot Rod Black Paint, Kit

Edit: They will also hook you up with the other stuff you will need to prep and clean. Get a gun, make sure you have a compressor that is capable and that has a drier.

thanks for all the feed back. I said we should use a gun, but he just didnt want to sinnk to much money into it yet. it is garaged kept so I figured that standing up to weather was not to much of an issue. but I think I'll suggest getting a gun and the paint mentioned above. good thoughts. and I know its all about the prep work. we will be spending the better part of the week just taping and dissasembling the car.

You can get a decent gun for about 40 bucks for what you are going to be doing, and with that and the paint will probably cost you less than buying the rattle cans

No shit. Why even bother prepping it if you are going to rattle can it. Ever hear any famous car builders talk about how well their rustoleum laid on the car.

Rattle cans are good for stuff like painting over welds on your sub frame conectors or just general unseen stuff to protect the metal from rusting.....not for painting the exsterior of a car.

With out offending any one....I think this whole flat black look you see all the time with the all black wheels is a fad that will look so outdated in a few years

I wanted to do my Fox satin black for the longest time. I helped a friend of mine paint his SN 95 Satin black. That made me change my mind. It was cool for awhile but not something I could live with.
