If the aod is all stock, thats the way they normally shift when you shift them manually. Normally you will have to do whats called a shuttle shift, which is manually shift into second, then pull it back into first, it should stay in 2nd, then when you shift into 2nd again it will go into 3rd.

Your best bet would be a Trans Go AOD HP shift it which replaces the manual valve so you can hold 1,2,3 to any rpm, plus it comes with a high rpm govener kit that allows you to leave it in D and it will shift itself between 5500-6000 depending on the throttle cable setting.

I have seen AODs shift alot quicker even with 3.73 gears are installed. Like stated above pull the shifter back to 1st after shifting into 2nd to hold 2nd gear as long as you want.

Manually shifting on a stock aod is gonna kill it pretty quick.Sound like your gonna need to fix it soon anyway..Get a stall and a manual valvebody.I getting mine rebuilt next week.My old one didnt last long with me beating on it.

it has the trans go kit and a ptc stall converter, it use 2 hold 1st, still holds 1st, goes into 2nd then into 3rd now, i can't figure it out, i hadn,t changed anything, i even clamped off the cable so it'll have constant pressure but it still shifts early, it's a drag car not a street car, 1/8th mile at a time
