Both the same as far as strength goes. Not sure, but the 85 may not be tapped for the lifter hold down for roller lifters.

The 85 is a roller block? I didnt think they had roller blocks in 85. If you have a flat tappet 85 block vs a roller 89 block the difference with the same setup would be about 20-30 horsepower and a longer life in favor of the 89. The roller lifter allows the cam to have a longer arch on it causing valves to stay at max lift longer producing more power. In order to put a roller cam in a non roller block you need to either have the lifter ports ground down to allow the use of the spider, or use special roller lifters that have a link bar on them keeping them from turning.

Hope I was right on all that.

yep i was right 85 mustang first year of roller cam, I should have know for a fact do to me owning an 85gt, but i pulled this out as proof any ways

Another new grille design came along for the 1985 model year featuring a single large slit between the two pairs of headlights. The GT was treated to a new set of 15-inch cast-aluminum wheels shod with P225/60VR15 Goodyear Eagle "Gatorback" tires, and thanks to a serpentine single belt accessory drive system and revised roller cam, the 5.0 HO engine was now making a full 210 horsepower in four-barrel carbureted form.

heheh a FULL 210! Wish we were back in those days when 210 was alot. Hell the new scion has a 190hp naturally aspirated 4 banger this year. The mustang V6 is at 300hp. gonna take alot to get my 83 up to par with a new gt LOL.
