Keep driving it like that and the rod will break and destroy your block. The cheap solution is fix it now the right way before you do more damage than already done.

I should have asked, have you checked your valve lash? you can adjust rockers with hydraulic lifters, do you have stock lifters?

Go to the classified section and look for a new car! No, wait that wouldn't be cheap! So is it a tap tap tap or a knock knock knock? Have you checked your lug nuts? Scratch that one I don't think lug nuts would make a knocking sound, more like a thump when your spindle hits the ground and you start seeing sparks fly up, and you watch your wheel roll into the bumper of a oncoming brand new chevy pickup. Sorry, having flashbacks!

Have you messed with or adjusted the timing lately?

On mine I had adjusted the timing but didn't realize the balancer had spun.

It wouls knock under minor to mid acceleration. But under hard acceleration it would ping. Didn't find out till after I had pulled the engine and replaced that the engine was running 7 degrees out of time. Making the knock a spark knock.

That engine needed to be rebuilt anyways thats why I didn't really mind once I found out after replacing the engine anyways.

Might want to check that out if you had adjusted the timing lately.

how does your balancer spin?

and calypso, if you dont have any friends with trained ears, take it to a mechanic and ask him. not to doubt your abilities, but im pretty sure its not easy to distinguish between spark knock and rod knock. and both are pretty serious. its relatively easy to check your timing with the right tools, but not everyone has a timing light just lying around.

The outside part of the balancer will spin on the inner part of it.
It happens when the rubber dries out and gets hard.

After I took the pulley off I could see alot of the rubber falling out of the back of the balancer.

Yeah, that's what I would do. Take it to a trained ear. There are lots of knocks and taps for different things from broken exhaust hanger, to valves, to rods, mnts and exhaust leaks that sort of sound like taps. It will be hard fro someone on a forum to tell you what it is without hearing it. There is no cheap way to fix it if you want to fix it right unless it is something other than an internal thing. A car is a luxury, but a Mustang is a necessity, so I would get it done right.
