trying to get this thing fired up, timing issue help needed

I am trying to fire the fresh build up but I am having a timing issue. this is my first build, so do not take any thing for granted..lol
Just some back ground
347, stock block
F-cam
MSD ignition system
carburated
Cam set at 0 degrees
When I set the timing to get it to fire, it back fires out the carburetor, I take that for to far advanced. If I retard it a little it will not fire. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using the correct firing order?

As stated, check, and double check your firing order. Also verify you went counterclockwise on the distributor. believe it or not, I've seen people put them on clockwise.

Are you sure the distribtor is stabbed correctly? A tooth off possibly? 180* out?

Yea I checked my firing order about 20 times..lol
I pulled out the #1 plug and bumped till it blew out the paper towel I used to plug the hole, I did this about 50 times (exagerated, but probably close) had the same results every time. I then took out #1 plug and turned by hand until my pointer was adv 20*, turned it over, hit the ignition switch, fired right up. Got the timing set at 36* at 3k backed it down just a hair and it died, turned it up and idle was crazy high, guess it should stay at 36*? Needless to say, it is running now, and I'm excited like the kid in christmas story with his red rider bb gun! has a little bit of lifter rattle, guess I should let it run then readjust rockers since the lifters are primed up good? I need to find someone who is good with carbs to get me fine tuned in adn I am ready to go!

Did you pull the spout connector out when you were setting your timing?

So the spout connecter is real? never heard of that. I thought maybe he was trying to pull one over one me, like asking if I have checked the blinker fluid!..lol

yea, got it going. Just got to get someone over here smarter than me to help get it fine tuned and road ready, sounds great and has good idle. Definately going to swap cam this winter, that f-cam has no lope to it in this 347. Over the winter custom cam and some AFR 225, or some trickflow heads! Have some fun cruising the way it is, but the wolrd heads and f-cam not going to satisfy for long.

Yep, just not on a crab'd engine.

A letter cam will hold that 347 back. They're pretty weak in a 302, and really not enough for a 347.
