347 Stroker with Yates N351 heads
Has anyone ran (or knows these heads) on a 347 stroker, roller block, efi.
Here are the specs I found ( I believe this to be correct). Should give me a 10:9:1 compression ratio. * Bare Head (64cc Chamber) * Much improved air flow over previous E351 heads * Developed by Ford Racing with the help of Larry Lackey and Robert Yates of Robert Yates Racing * Machined for 2.02" intake and 1.60" exhaust valve diameters * Intake and exhaust valves have been moved .070" to unshroud the intake valve * Valve angle changed from 20 degrees to 10 degrees to further improve air flow * Intake port volume 195cc, exhaust port volume 78cc nominal The lot of stuff I bought came with two sets of these yates N351 windsor heads off his circle track car. It also came with a forged sunrey (eagle) crank and rods (5.40) and forged flat top day pistons with flycuts (his cam is massive) (also came with a set of Keith black flat top forged pistons w/ no flycuts). Solid roller lifters (switching to hydraulic rollers) and Brodix-F stud girdle. And too much other stuff to list. Looking to have a custom ground cam from Ed Curtis and I have someone tracked down for the headers. All the numbers look good on paper, i was just wondering if someone has seen these heads ran in person. It has been suggested that I run small diameter LSX style duals valve springs, I already have the requisite off-set roller rockers for the import and exhaust. For the money, I think I am way ahead of the game, I just don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to engine components and yall's help is always appreciated. |

I don't know much about those heads, but don't buy valve springs until you talk to Ed. Just let him recommend the springs.

Doesn't seem like great flow numbers. I always thought I've heard people praise them. Maybe that's ported.

Like your location 69fastback, I'm not too far from his house. Yes those are the heads and yes those springs were per Ed. He said he had something mean in mind. The heads are at the shop now being cc'd and check to make sure they weren't milled (shouldn't be). I know TW and AFR is all anyone talks about and I had originally planned to go that way, but then this came along and it was too good of a deal to pass up. I will make money on the deal even if I don't use the heads, I was just checking to see if they were worth looking at since I already have them.
Edit: I have this up on this and classic forum, just wasn't sure which was the proper one. (going in a'66 coupe) |

If Ed says those springs are good, then I'm sure they'll work. I was just throwing it out there because it seems a lot of people just pick some springs without knowing. As I said, I'm not too familiar with those heads, but the OTB flow numbers look a little weak for a 347. If you're getting the, worked, they may clean up well though. Ed does good work. I'm sure he will get the best out of them.

From my research (see google) it has been noted that these heads were designed to meet specs ( I assume nascar/circle track) and that there is 0.200 worth of extra material in the ports so it is easy to "raise the roof" ( I assume that means to port them) and get flow numbers much higher (300-325) range. I have zero knowledge, just spewing back out what I have read. I will be happy with anything over 400 hp, but my engine shop thinks it could be closer to 500 (never believe what they tell you). I just don't want to choke it down, but this is the exact set up the circle track guy was running (minus the cam/springs) and I'm sure it screamed. Just want to make it a little more streetable and get back into the proper power band.

These don't mean anything to me b/c I don't have a clue when it comes to flow numbers, but here is something I found that Ford put out regarding otb flow numbers:
N-351 Lift I/E @ 28" H2O 0.200 141/97 0.300 160/127 0.400 212/142 0.500 232/161 0.600 244/169 0.700 255/172 I'm sure since these are "seasoned" heads they probably have had some work,is there a way for my local shop to double check? Last edited by 66resto; May 12th, 2011 at 10:12 PM. |
