Question

Help with my 351w

Alright I bought this mint stang off this guy who didn't drive it much, it's been sitting and I'd like to update the carb, it's got an older Holley on it now not sure what model I can find out later, anyways the motor is a 351w bored .30 over, dart heads with minor work, hydraulic mild cam, it seems that at 2,000 to 3,000 rpm it will falls on it's face for a second I'd like to update the carb with something better? But what? It is running very rich smokes a little blue smoke when cold, I'm wondering what I should do to get more power, maybe a different cam? Carb? Any suggestions? Other than this the car screams but I think it has more power to offer. The engine only has about 1,000 miles on it but that is over a long time.

Forgot to mention I'm running a 6,000 chip right now when I shift into second it seems like it should get up and go better than it does? Carb? Like I said this car has been sitting so long only 16,000 miles on it since 91, 1,000 or so on newer motor that was built 3 to 4 yrs ago. I'm familiar with the guy that built the engine he is a big mustang guy but no longer lives around me. It's a 1986 gt.

well first thing I would do is a basic tune up.

plugs, wires, cap and rotor, check timing, run some sea foam through it, ETC that sort of stuff.

then I would start focussing on upgrades.

without knowing exactaly what cam is in the motor, there is no real telling what your power band is, or will be able to do. so giving you ideas for upgrades will be difficult.

do you know WHICH dart heads they are? what intake? how big is the carb?

you can get cheap summit brand carbs, if you just want something cheap, and that works good over all.

If it sat for a long time more then likely the carb needs rebuilt. As for the mileage thats a bit weird for a 86. I know in the 80s people were big with unhooking the speedo.
