5 lug Conversion
Ok I have a question either nobody will have the answer to or one everyone knows. I bought a thunderbird super coupe differential from a guy a few months ago. They come with 3.55 and 3.73 gears with disc brakes so I thought it was sweet for only 200 bucks. However, now I want to go for a 5 lug conversion. I think the guy said they are 31 spline. So I know latemodelrestoration.com sells complete kits for cheap. But will they work since I have this differential? It is still an 8.8 but I wanted to make sure. Thanks

your best bet if you want a easy 5 lug conversion if to buy a sn95 differential and front wheel spindles from a junk yard. its a cheap direct bolt on. you could sell the t-bird rear end and buy everything and still have cash left over

Is it just the 94 and 95 that are direct bolt on?

im not too shure on the exact years, but as long as its a sn95 body with spindles and hub rotors, its a direct bolt on (as so is the rear diff). and you'll also have rear disc brakes. its also recomended to replace the master cylinder, but you can get away without doing so. you brake pedal will just be a bit tougher. and from then on, just buy 95' brake components when serviving your brakes.

the spindles are 94/95 only because of the tie rod mounting location i think you can use 96+ but it will cause steering issues and you need to either use ball joints from a 94/95 or use some washers on top of the spindle if you use the fox ball joint

fox and sn95 housings are the same, sn95 axles are longer from the housing "out" about .75" per side. all the of the sn95 5 lug axles/rear disk is a direct bolt on... with minor work adapting brake lines/ ebrake cables
fox ball joints plus sn95 spindles = washer/spacer under the nut... no matter the year. do a search for 5 lug swap.... if you are on a budget... you can simply switch to 5 lug front rotors, without swapping to sn95 spindles/unit bearing hubs. the sn95 upgrade is geared more towards wanting to run 13" cobra barkes in the future. |

the gears will suck, so you will need to buy the R&P of choice. while you "could" run a set of used gears... why? they are cheap, as is the install kit. the expense will come from having it proper set up. a lil hint here.... you will prob get a better install deal if you take the housing in for a "bench install" |
