Custom Air System or Not?
Im not a performance junkie, so do laugh if this question is stupid.
I just installed a cold air intake system on my 94 gt. Then I got to thinking, the purpose of this is better air flow, right? Well, I was wondering if I could have just installed a straight pipe from my throttle body to the front bumper of my car (kinda like front exhaust pipe), put a screen on it (no filter) and ran it like that. Would that mess anything up? How would my car run after that? Would I gain HP? What is your opinion on this? Thanks in advance.. |

You need a filter. It keeps all the crap from screwing up your valves, and injectors/jets. A screen would not stop enough, you need as clean air as you can get. The filter isn't there to just keep out mice, its also there to keep out dust, dirt and micro particles. I don't know which C/A/I you got but those shiny chrome ones that look so good also collect more heat. Keep coming up with ideas though, who knows you might get rich off one of them some day.

Well, I did get one of those nice aluminum cai's. so they produce more heat then a stock unit? My stock rubber one used to be extremely hot to the touch, so i figured i'd try the aluminum (off-brand model but only cost $25) lol.
as for the idea on a custom intake... If I used the same set-up as described above, but used an air filter along with it, would it be better then ever? off topic for a sec.. a super charger basically just increases the air input right? (sorry not a gear head, and dont feel like researching the def. of a supercharger.) So the faster i get that air into the throttle body, the more hp? |

The easiest way to explain a super charger turbo or nitrous and to a degree a cai is this, your engine is basically an air pump the more and faster you can get air in the more fuel you can put to go withe the air and in turn the more hp and torque you can achieve. that also applies to your exhaust.

No, its better than your stock one, but they make better composite and smooth plastic ones that don't collect as much heat. Yes, you would get colder air from the bumper area (common place for a filter on a turbo). You would also get colder air from the fender well. Like he said the s.c. does just that, puts more air in so you can put more fuel in to get a bigger bang. You would also need some high flow heads and intake for any serious gains that would make a s.c. worth it. IMO
