need help with oil sending unit
my BIL has a 1991 GT with a built 331 stroker that we're trying to put an aftermarket oil pressure gauge in. There is no sending unit in the block and when we pulled the gauge cluster out of the dash, the leads on the back of the cluster that lead to the oil pressure gauge is broken. so he is going to order a new gauge cluster but we need to know what oil sending unit we need to buy. is it mechanical or electric? part number? If electric, how do we wire it? If you need anymore information about the car please ask. Thanks in advance.

I'm clueless when it comes to this oil pressure stuff. If he wants to run a mechanical gauge, then do we just hook up an oil line to the fitting on the block and run it to the gauge?

yes for a mechanical gauge you just run the nylon tube from the oil pressure sending unit spot to the gauge. For the stocker its one wire thats part of the fuel injector harness that goes on the stock sender

Yes on the Mechanical, and the oil sending unit is supposed to be located up by the first cylinder on the driver's side towards the front of the car (#5 cylinder). Mechanical is more accurate, but if he can repair the broken wire, and the factory wire still exists (has a 90 degree boot on it and should be somewhere up there, maybe by the injectors), then it'll be easier.

okay thanks guys. I understand it a little now. The factory wiring for the electric sending unit is gone. I have no idea what moron took it off and why. it was gone when he bought the car. He has an aftermarket mechanical gauge that he bought at autozone with the plastic line. Will that line be sufficient? If not, I'm thinking about telling him that he's messing up putting the mechanical gauge in and that he should just buy a new pig tail for the electric unit.

You said it has no sending unit at all? Did they just put a plug in it? Mechanical is more accurate, just keep the line routed away from the headers, lol. Now the question remains: Is cheap mechanical still better than factory on/off style pressure switch? Probably.

To Hatch: I think the dude from Florida 5.0 said they send braided line with their units for temp and water. Hope I heard him right!

the oil sending unit is about 8" from where the battery is grounded to the block
