Put on stock mid-pipe/cats, and odd issues pop up.

So Emissions is coming up. and since I cant hit the track until I hit a rollbar, and I'm probably putting that off until winter.... I decided to put the stock mid-pipe on to go ahead and get my emissions junk out of the way.

Anyway, so they went on just fine, but sounded..... funneh...

almost sounded like a leak at the front cat, but there is no leak, cracks, and there is no leak at the headers or mid pipe.

So I let them get some heat, and while I was feeling around for leaks, I was like "wtf, they feel kinda hot."

like radiant heat burn hot.

So I went and got my infared heat gun, and its showing 890-903 degrees at the front cat, at idle. car only been on a few minutes. motor is at like 140-150 degrees seems like REALLY high temps just for idling.

drove it to work tonight. first off, I expected a loss in power, but midrange is kinda meh, but top end is gone Very noticeable power loss compared to the offroad pipe.

also there was some traffic on the way to work, and when it was letting up, I was in 4th gear, at 2,000 rpm, so I layed into it to get back upto speed, and the car hesitated, and kind bucked around a little. it never does that.... Maybe detonation?

then most the way to work, been on the highway about 5 miles or so, and reolize the car is sitting at 180 degrees. This is at 60-65mph, and its about 55-60 degrees out.

In thouse kind of conditions the car would be at 160 degrees before.

So lots of heat off the exhaust, (which makes it stink), exhaust stinks/odd smell, hessetation at low rpm's and no power in the upper rpm's, and the motor is a lot hotter then normal. 20* difference.

I talked to my buddy I work with, that works on cars when I got to work, and he thinks that the stock midpipe is just choking my motor to death. Like there is too much back pressure.

I was more thinking that the cats might be clogged. I blew them out with the compresser, and banged them on the ground a little, and nothing came out, or sounded lose.

Last time these where on the car was with the stock heads/cam when I had to do emissions last, and I noticed NO difference in performance, or anything, just quieted down the exhaust a lot.

thoughts?

I don't care that its lost power. They will only be on a few weeks. But the heat, smell and hessitation has me worried.

Have they been run in the past without the smog pump for a while? I have noticed that when you let cats sit for a while they do make the exhaust stink sometimes.

My old pipes used to do that. They would get hot as hell before the cat, and cooler after it. It was easy to find that problem. I just hollowed out the cats, but you have to pass inspection. It sucks the aftermarket midpipes with cats are so expensive. You don't have any friends with a stock fox that will let u borrow the pipe?

Im using a stock mid pipe that came on my car to pass the emissions. afterword I will put the offroad pipe back on.

I don't think the system is clogged. it ran fine last it was on the car.

it drove alright on the way home. the hesitation seemed gone. power is still down. but you can smell that odd smell every time you get on the throttle.

to and from work is about 30 miles, so idk how that shit that smells is not burned up yet. I kinda cruised to work, but I was driving pretty hard on the way home.

shits odd.

I let my old buick sit for a while and once I started it back up, the smell started and never went away. Every time the car ran it smelled funny after that. I've had couple cars shat smelled for a few days and then were good after sitting for a while too though. If you've got no smog pump they aren't working properly anyway. Plus if you ever burned oil, it will slowly clog them up. Let it sit for a while and the oil starts to pool up down towards the bottom of the honeycomb. Could be that too.

HMMM, IDK.

maybe it is because the smog pump is gone.

I have a way around the inspection where I don't have to put the smog pump back on. but I still wanted to put the stock cats on to try and make it burn a bit cleaner then just an open ass off road pipe.

hopefully I can get it to pass soon, and tear these POS back off.
