So lost really need help!

i have an 87 gt 5.0 auto. i know what youre saying, "why and auto" well i just got this about 2 days ago and its the first auto ive had of 5. the guy i got it off of said that only 1st 2nd and reverse work. so i had it towed to my house and what not. now before i get a whole new trans, i want to know what everyone thinks. im really stuck on this and have very little cash to fix things right now. its going to be my daily driver. i dont want to sell it because it is in very nice shape and runs great. its all stock btw. thank you!

i would take it for a little drive and see whats wrong. maybe itll make some noises or something to help give you a clue as to whats wrong with the trans and/or valve body. it could just need an adjustment or something. unless the PO smoothed off some gears, i would assume its an electrical or valve body issue before mechanical, IMO...

Check the fluid to make sure there's enough, and that it's reddish not brown. Also make sure it doesn't smell burnt. More importantly check the throttle valve cable, it's also called a tv cable. The bushing that holds the tv cable to the throttle body is known to break, it can also be out of adjustment. Check out clickclickracing.com they have a lot of info on it.

You can keep your stock exhaust setup except instead of the stock mufflers weld in a pair of Flowmaster 40s

check the tranny fluid. Does it look dark like its burnt? If not, I'd simply change the transmission filter and fluid to see if that fixes the problems with the transmission.

I had an auto tranny go out before that had similar symptoms. Its worth checking before paying for a new tranny.

You buy a car without having money to fix it??? Anyway, more than likely you have the clutches for third (Third gear in drive) and the band for overdrive (4th gear) are smoked.

the best thing you can really do at this point is either get another trans from a junk yard or local forum, i dont know how the mustang scene is in ohio but an aod trans can be had around here for cheap on the local forums, or you can try and simply change the fluid and the filter and hope that works but odds are u might just be wasting money

could need a rebuild or just your clutches are bad .
I would take it to a good tranny shop & see what they say.
Good luck on getting that baby running good.
