Tps is 4.97 @ closed throttle!!!
I have a 1989 mustang 5.0 and it seems to be running and idling fine (right below 1 grand about 900)despite the constant strong gas smell which i thought was due to deleting the charcoal canister and not having a vented gas cap. I decided to check the tps voltage just because, and it seems as tho im getting a reading of 4.97 @ closed throttle with a dvm reading from ground on firewall to green sig wire. I have tried adjusting the tps by rotating in one way and another but it seems to give the same reading. I have asked a couple of buddies and they've pretty much told me if it aint broke dont fix it,but in my opinion something may indeed need to be fixed. I was also considering elongating the holes on the tps to try and get a better adjustment because it dosent seem to move very much in the first place. If anyone has had a similar problem, suggestions or just some good old fashioned knowledge i would greatly appreciate it.

don't ground it on the firewall. Poke the wire with the red stripe (or green) through it with the red lead on the dvm and the gray wire with the black stripe (IIRC) with the black lead. Should be at .95 to .98 @ closed throttle. I wobbled out the holes on mine for adjustment and just did it to a buddies also...it's fine.
That's the way I've always done it anyway.

You tested it with the car off right? Did you test the orange wire to ground?

It's the green wire and the blk/wht wire you want to probe. Blk/wht is the signal return wire which is basically the ground that goes to all the sensors and back to the computer. The actual signal wire for the TPS is green and the vref (5 volt supply) is the orange wire. This needs to be tested with the key in the on position. Black lead from the meter to the blk/wht and red lead from the meter to the green wire.
The computer re-learns TPS voltage every time you cycle the key. It doesn't need to be at that bullshit mythical .98v or .99 or .97, or whatever other number people want to make up. As long as it's above .5 and below 1.19 with the blade closed it's within spec. http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/te...ng_Diagram.gif |
