87 mustang and 99 cougar wheel swap??
Here's the deal. I need new tires for my DD 99 cougar. I WANT BADLY new wheels and tires for my 87 stang.
Question is: will my 87 mustang wheels fit on my 99 cougar so I can use the money I'd spend on cougar tires toward buying new wheels/tires for the stang? I got on vehicle-bolt-pattern.com and it said the mustang stock was a 15x7 with a 4x108 bolt pattern, 1/2-RH lug size, MM=-, OS=M. I have 16x7's with 225/50/16's on the stang. The cougar was 16x6 with a 4x108 bolt pattern also, a 12mmx1.5 lug size, MM=63.9, OS=H. I have 215/50/16's on the cougar. I don't know what the MM and OS mean, but is the 4x108 the only important thing or is there something else I should be concerned about??? Thank you for your help!! Chris |

Even though the lug pattern is the same, I doubt the wheels interchange. The two big things that are gonna make this not happen are the backspacing and the hub diameter. Even if the hub diamter is similar enough to mount the wheels, I'd be willing to bet that the backspacing is totally different. FWD cars generally have a lot of backspace relative to the wheel width (high positive offset), RWD cars generally have less (0 to negative offeset). What that means is that if you try to put FWD wheels on a RWD car, the wheels sit way too far inboard.

I pulled a wheel from each and I see what you mean with the offsets, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. bolted 'em up just to see what it would look like. The mustang wheels on the cougar stick out about and inch more than the cougar wheels did. I turned the front wheels the whole way and no rub. Took a short drive and didn't get them to rub. But they may, given the right circumstances. The hub on the cougar was a little smaller than the wheel from the mustang was though.
