Excessive oil cunsumption in a new motor

Hi, Trying again, forgot to put a subject on this the first time so it may show up anywhere. As you can tell, I am new to this forum. On to my problem:
Engine build is a new Ford out of the box 5.0 block, w/new crank, rods, pistons, rings, and oil pump, all stock.
The cam is silghtly radical (don't have numbers here at work with me), new, with new roller rockers and roller lifters with correct pushrods.
The intake is an Edlebrock RPM II (I think) with proper sized injectors and a fuel pressure regulator.
Porblem: The engine will suck out the oil via the PCV, from all indications, at a rate of ~3qts/mile. The PSV screen is in place as is the deflector plate on the underside of the manifold, I took it off to make sure. Does anyone have any idea as to why this thing would be sucking up that much oil so fast.

All help will be appreciated as I am not a great mechanic and my thinker has about thunk out on this one.

To note, I have removed the plugs and blown out the liquid twice and have also seen raw oil exiting the exhaust system. Compression in all cylinders is the same, again, don't have the numbers in front of me at present.

Thanks,
jpalm

sounds like a broke oil ring or missing expander

I have thought of that, but, there is an abundance of oil in the intake plenum (sp) and oil in the rear four cylinders. I really can't see one broken ring causing that much oil concumption, but not ruling it out. Anyway, thanks for the reply, need all the help I can get on this one.

do u have good oil pressure? Good cylinder pressures-could be valve seals? are the heads new/newer?

SALIV8, Yes, I have good oil pressure until the oil pump looses suction. the heads are new, Air Flow Research aluminum. Also thought about the seals, even new ones can be bad, but with fiinding oil in the plenum, I'm stuck on the idea that it is sucking it out via the PCV valve system. My thoughts are to put the hose from the PCV into a collection system and see if it blows oil out or solves the problem. But, still looking, hoping that someone may have had this same problem and knows how to correct it.

Thanks for your thoughts,
jpalm

the oil ring is not like a compression ring. it is a dual rail ring and has an expander ring underneath it to help the oil ring expand as rpms increase and thus more efficient cylinder wall oil scraping. if the ring doesnt expand, the walls will not be scraped as efficiently, allow compression past the ring and push oil through the valves. is the pcv valve replaced? try replacing if not, the can get stuck

stang fanatic,

lol, well, I showed my ignorance on that one, I have never heard it call an expander. I've always know it to be a tension spring, oh well, lesson learned. And thanks for the reminder about the PCV valve, I do indeed need to replace it. Just a note, the parts houses around here all list the incorrect PCV valve for this engine, the original is a single hose, 1/4" i believe, the books (computers) list a double, side draw valve. Will have to go to fomoco for one I guess.

Again, thanks,
jpalm
