Idle Issues

I got caught in the rain with the hood up for about 3 minutes, I closed the hood and the next day I started the car and the battery light came on and it won't stay running at idle. If I keep it above 1500 rpms it stays running and the battery light never go out. also sometimes it will take a few times for it to start up. The battery gauge needle goes to the normal area when started and it turns over just fine. I let the car sit for a day in the sun to let everything dry out but nothing changed. Tomorrow I will put a meter on the battery to see if the alternator is charging correctly. I haven't had a chance to really look into it because of work. Any ideas on what it might be?

The car is fuel injected

71 views, NO response wow thanks guys.......

even though I havent got any responses I am going to add more info:

The alternator issue is fixed but it still will not idle.
If it sit over night or long enough to cool it will start and idle till it gets warm and it shuts off. Then when you restart it, it starts up idle for 3-5 seconds then shut off unless you hold it above idle. Does this sound like a bad maf or iac?

I washed an engine without it running and had water trapped in the sparkplug wires, If the alternator is charging, check for water in the plug wires.

Its fixed. When I cleaned the maf and started it up this morning it still would shut off in about 2 seconds at idle. This afternoon I started it up and it runs fine. I sprayed the sensor pretty good and I guess it wasn't dry enough when I tried it.

Hmmmm. So i take it that the rain wasnt a factor in the issue you had with your car ? cuz i dont see how rain would have gotton inside your maff. So it was just dirty ?

Ok, I only spent about 30-45 minutes on the days that I looked at the car (busy). I didn't replace anything just checked connections and cleaned but nothing changed. When I removed the air filter I sprayed maf cleaner on the sensor inside. I sprayed quite a bit of it on the sensor and let it sit for awhile. I put the air filter back on and started it up and it still would cut off after 2 seconds of idling. So I left it alone and came back about 3 hrs later and gave it one more try and it stayed running. Took it for a ride and back and it kept idle.

So my guess is that the water got through the filter and mixed with the filter oil (k&n) and it got on the sensor filament.

Also, in case you didnt know, And ive made this mistake my self. When you oil the k&n filter, you should only use a varry varry varry light coating of oil on the filter, thats all you need. If you put to much oil on or you dont let the oil set for a while (dry),before you drive itl, then oil gets sucked up the intake and gets all over your mass air flow sensor.
